Recruiting - 2016

Recommended Posts

Barnes has history of hitting lucky shots. We have probably poisoned the well when it comes to Barnes, anyway.

Well let's hope we aren't recruiting him based upon his ability to hit lucky shots. He looks like a nice get for SIUE. Do you think we should offer him?

SLU should stop recruiting the St. Louis Eagles.

Discuss.

SLU will always be viewed as a lower tier program by the locals. That's the way it always has been and way it always will be until we have a legitimate coach tenured here.

Unless we have a young gifted HC like Stevens or Shaka, this program will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER land a top recruit or even be regarded as a legitimate, successful program. 3 tourney appearances followed by last place is not going to cut it, especially in the minds of these young kids we are recruiting.

I know this sounds and I usually don't have this mentality, but if you have low expectations to begin with, you'll never be disappointed. I've found that with SLU basketball, this works best.

Tough to rip on Tatum for choosing Duke over SLU. But he did practice with our guys, use our facilities, and mention us a bunch of times on social media. We'll never know how truly close the decision was. Perhaps he had made up his mind earlier and didn't want to disappoint his parents/friends. Who knows

I also don't get the academics comment. He'll only be there for 1 year. Sounds like a throw-away cliché comment...

I really felt he would be a Billiken a few weeks ago, and that feeling slowly waned, mainly due to how he's close with Giles. He chose what he thought was best for him.

I'm getting to the same point as you about expectations, Bizziken. It's kinda sad. I'm not sure when we're going to be good again.

Is the staff there for the finals? If they did in fact know a few days ago, they've still been watching the Eagles play. Unless they were hoping Tatum pulled a Deandre Jordan, Crews is watching someone pretty hard. I'd guess Tillmon, Goodwin, Sneed?

Moving on, VC doesn't show it, but ESPN has SLU offering PG Carsen Edwards. 247 showed low interest, but also shows that SLU hasn't offered him. Anyone know if SLU just recently offered?

Can't find a date on the offer, but multiple sites show them as having interest. Probably occurred at one of the peaks of Tatum frenzy so it was just missed.

If the staff knew days ago - why was everyone at the Peach Jam? Why was no one at any of the other events?

Could you imagine the outrage from fans if Crews was not at the Peach Jam and Tatum was still undeclared?

I never heard a report that platte was there so maybe he was elsewhere.

Presuming we are still recruiting some of the Eagles, we have to still show up to those games. Failure to do so would be a slap in their faces.

Totally agree. You look at the successful programs like X, Zaga, G, Town, Nova, they have dynamic winning fairly young guys. We have a 60 year old guy who lucked out with Rick's players and won a COY. We should start looking now, because this year's gonna suck.

As for the Eagles and other local talent we need to build up an image that by staying home is good for the city and good for them. If you look over the last 20 years we've only got one top ranked SL player, the legend, and there were other circumstances that made him choose SLU. We don't need the one cream of the crop five star SL star, but we at least need some of the 3's and an occasional 4. Build a strong team around those types, and SLU will be more appealing to local kids and fans. This is why we need a good younger guy like Mullins who says he wants St. John's to fill his roster with NYC players. Grawer was able to do it to a point, a young up and comer ought to be able to do it here as well. Could Clagget be the type? The Bonner ship has sailed, but look for local guys who are successful AC's and know the terrain.

Are you really comparing New York and Saint Louis in terms of basketball talent? We can win with players from everywhere and will often have to.

Grow the hell up. Next year isn't going to suck and the year after we'll be shocking the dodgeball world again. Losing Tatum sucks but he was not the long term answer anyway.

To get on topic, seems like landing Curry is the key. While he's not a top 100 guy or anything, he'll be a 4 year guy and even seems like he can be a solid 4 year contributor. I'm not really impressed with any of the other guys that we're going after/have a realistic shot at. We spent a lot of time with Tatum this summer so it's hard to say where we stand with everyone else.
