Ford on 920 right now

I don't remember Majerus, Crews, or Soderberg ever going on that show.

Majerus did... even went to lunch with those guys. Majerus did a LOT more with the local media than he is given credit for by many on this board. He was quirky with the coaches show and a few other things, but I don't recall a SLU coach appearing on more different local and national radio shows.

Majerus did. I don't know if it ever materialized, but they made plans to go to lunch at Adrianna's during the interview.

One personal story that likely only this board would find interesting. The day I proposed to my now wife I ran up to Adriana's (our favorite deli in the area and at the time only a few minutes from our house in south city) to grab lunch for a picnic in Forest Park where I would actually propose. It was the day after the official start of practice for college basketball and it was the year that SLU had the rug pulled out from underneath them with the suspensions of Kwamain and Willie (which may have just been announced at the time, don't remember for sure). As I am walking out to my right at a table outside is Porter Moser who I immediately say hi to without realizing he is sitting with the entire coaching staff including Majerus. I have a quick conversation with Porter asking about the team and then telling him they have good taste coming to Adriana's. At that point Rick turns and looks at me and introduces himself. Up until my mention of Adriana's it was obvious that Rick had no desire to engage in the conversation. I was already really nervous with the proposal about to happen, so I blew the opportunity to say much more beyond shaking his hand and wishing him luck on the season.

Did Bernie just reference Billikens.com?

He has been worked about this site since Ford got hired. For as worked up about the posters on here as he got, it was obvious that he really didn't read or understand why posters had a problem with the Ford hiring.

He wrote that Stephane Lasme was part of Ford's recruiting success and proof of NBA bona fides when Stephane Lasme was recruited to UMass by Lappas. Also, all the recruiting success works against Ford as those teams never even went to the NCAA (and Eastern Kentucky, with that great recruiting class got a 15 seed with Ford and a 16 seed two years later--obviously he recruited guys who could play well in 4 days at the Ohio Valley Championship). I would like to think Ford has learned a few things since then but he was an incredibly poor user of talent back then. I do not think Bernie knows much about college basketball.

The worst example of ignorance in his praise of Ford is the "up tempo" / "fun to watch" comments he attaches to Fordball. SLU's "uptempo" the last two years was NOT fun to watch and Oklahoma State has played at a slower tempo than SLU's Crews Control teams. Tempo has nothing to do with "fun to watch" or "good basketball" or even "recruit friendly" (recruits are much smarter and notice that nearly all of the top 20 teams now play reasonable to slow tempos; out of the 50 fastest teams in the country this year only Xavier was any good). This past season Oklahoma St. played with one of the lowest tempos (337th!!!!) and SLU was 126th. This is actually in Ford's favor as he was trying to adapt and get the most out of his team with injuries

Additionally, none of the sports personalities in StL (and nationally) pay any attention to college basketball until the conference tournaments. Then they try to act like experts and come off sounding ignorant.

Plus, I don't think a successful formula for SLU is an uptempo style. We are never going to get the caliber of athletes (no matter how great Ford is at recruiting) to compete with the Big Boys with that style.

There are many facts in this post of the cold and hard variety.

I hope we play whatever style gives us the best chance to win in each game. This crap about "oh i come to see uptempo dunks" is lame. Just win baby. Be boring and get to the sweet sixteen and will anyone be saying"oh its boring to watch" ???? NO!

If we can score 200 points and win every game, thats fine too.

Yes, I could care less about style. Winning is fun and entertaining. Most coaches talk about playing uptempo even if they don't - even RM talked about it at times. I think it's just something to get fans and recruits excited.

Curious as to what he said.

After Ford left, Bernie started saying something along the lines of:

"I know some SLU fans out there on the web, particularly message boards--and I know that I myself can get a little crazy sometimes on message boards--have been criticizing this hire from the start, but this is a terrific hire for a number of reasons...." :D

And then he proceeded to explain why he thought it was a good hire.

That's more reasonable than him claiming we were pushing for the hire of Izzo, Coach K, or Roy Williams. At least he's backed off his completely made-up straw man argument.

I don't want Roy Williams. He's going to get slammed by the NCAA.

Curious as to what he said.

He referenced the board the morning after Stu's story about Ford coming to SLU broke as well. Said it cracked him up and was a fun read...but that we had unrealistic expectations.

He was right. Those that thought we were getting Drew or Stallings or Jacobsen weren't being realistic.

That being said, Bernie needs to stop reading message boards, or at the very least realize that message board represent only a small portion of a fan base. I like listening to Bernie, but he needs to stop using the "my opinions vs. the message boards opinions" crutch to drum up controversy for his opinions and his show. He's entertaining to listen to without that. I always thought of him as the anti sports shock jock type.

The vast majority of the people who were upset would have settled for a Russell Turner, TJ Otzelberger, Martin Ingelsby, Chris Caputo, etc.. People weren't pissed because they didn't land Drew, Stallings, or Jacobsen. That is a completely false narrative. They were upset because Ford got the job.

I agree, but I believe he was commenting on the few that thought we were going to get Drew or Stallings or that we should go after Jacobsen. His assessment that we had unrealistic expectations was not accurate in that it did not reflect what many on the board were feeling. I only agreed with him with respect to those that thought we should get one of those guys.
