Recruiting - 2016

Recommended Posts

For just a senior in high school, Gladson’s self-awareness and intangibles might be his biggest strengths. As a result, the three-star recruit has garnered offers from Brown and SIU Edwardsville with official visits scheduled at Princeton, Missouri, Lehigh and St. Louis University in upcoming weeks.

Just to clarify the core argument here: Unrealistic optimism when it is applied to Mizzou basketball is ridiculous and we should show outrage whenever it appears. Unrealistic optimism as applied to SLU is not just okay, but necessary to the degree that those who don't agree are "tools."

Got it.

If they're Mizzou fans regardless of whether they're journalists or not doing the positive spin on something bad, isn't it the same as our fans spinning things positively? We just lack the good fortune of a big journalism school that feeds our local rag. If we had those journalist-cheerleaders at the paper, you'd all love them.

I know it's hard to admit when you're being hypocritical, guys, but come on. I'm no Mizzou fan but let's not kid ourselves. Both programs are in the dumps right now and there are people on both sides grasping at any rays of sunshine.

Calling out fellow SLU fans by invoking a rival school and telling said SLU fans they a hypocrites = Tool. Just to be clear.

No reason to do it and it is a weak comparison you are now double downing on. Message Board Optimist is some how equal to Paid Journalist? Furthermore, last time I checked, the 1 pro-SLU "cheerleader" journalist, Frank C. is often criticized on this board.

You're not a SPUMAC fan so stop acting like one. Get on the Billiken Bus.

If Gladson had even one good wheel I'd offer him. He's skilled no doubt, and much taller than this article lists him, but he can't move at all. We are grasping at straws if we offer him.

One thing i find interesting about Gladson is, like Miles Reynolds, plays on a team that has an elite player(top 5 type ), plus other top rated recruits. Same with Davell Roby, but maybe not a top 5, but a nationally ranked team, where he is not the top focus., or even second. I would think Chaminade is going to be a favorite to win a state championship, or at least in the running

-if they are not the favorite with that roster I would like to see the team that is, granted CCP has not won it, but looking historically what roster from a Missouri high school would compare with the depth and high ranking? Ritter with White, Carrawell and Woods and if Vashon had Kern, McKinney, Gordon, Polk and Shelton on the same team are two that come to mind but I'm not sure those Vashon kids were all together, perhaps there are others

The 1969 Sumner team with six division one players including Harry Rogers, the 1971 Vashon team and the DeSmet team that had Stiponavich and Cusamano. I don't know if the Vashon team was nationally ranked but the Sumner and DeSmet teams were.

-were there others in addition to Stipo and Dressler that went D1 from that Desmet team? I don't recall any and the Sumner and Vashon teams are before my time

I don't remember but I don't think so. Also, I don't remember where Cusamano played.

The Vashon teams in 2001 and 2002 were nationally ranked. The 2002 team finished the season ranked #2 or #3 if I remember correctly. Shelton wasn't on those teams, as he graduated in 2000. I had forgotten about Gordon, but he may have been in 2001.

Hey Desmet, do the Spartans have any promising youngsters moving up to varsity this year? Stipo could use the help. The conference schedule is going to be brutal.

SLU has been checking on Simeon forward Ben Coupet, Jr. He's still growing into his body and is expected to be a big contributor this year.

Interesting recruit. Showcased big-time athleticism as a middle schooler and freshman (seemingly most available video is of him dominating kids at that age), but has struggled with consistency since then. He's listed as 6-6 or 6-7 most places but the most recent article I found said he's 6-9 and his dad is a 7-footer. So his inconsistency is probably related to rapid growth into his body, as you say. I think a lot of schools are keeping an eye on him but offers have been slow. Bradley and DePaul offered early, and East Carolina is the only one this year.

Here's one more name before I sign off for the weekend: Tim Finke's teammate, AJ Beckett, a skilled 6'9 forward from Champaign Central. Had to sit out last year due to transfer rules. Played a limited schedule during the AAU season.

Know anything else about him? Very, very little info available.

I can gather that he's skinny, a "mid-major-plus" recruit, and waiting to blow up.

Did Finke also transfer from Centennial to Central? No transfer rule applied there?
