For-DaLove
The only sport where you TRY to get hit in the head with the ball.Respond to my post about ratings, MB. I've defended you enough to deserve a response when I disagree with your absurd position. So give to us. Explain the ratings and how they can't compare to an average NFL game, because you'll lose the argument. And why you're at it tell us how your unders have been treating you the entire World Cup. You were so cocky about those.
For-DaLove
Nothing is more tense and nerve wrecking than post season baseball. While it doesn't have the fast pace like hockey, it has a certain element of uncertainty that other sports don't have (e.g. game 6 of the World Series in 2011). No sport except baseball could have produced such an unexpected and exciting result. So entertaining. I was at game 4 of the World Series last year and the most intense play of the game was a pick-off throw to first. Talk about exciting
Dwayne's_World
So if soccer 1. played 7 seconds then took a break for 40 seconds 2. Gave them 7 pts per goal 3. Allowed them to kick it over the goal for 3 pts when they couldn't move the ball past about the 20-30 yard line Would it be a good sport then? With American football comes the element of brutality. That's why it is so popular here. There are just many different reasons why Americans in general do not find soccer entertaining. Again, I actually have enjoyed most of the World Cup so I'm not personally bagging on soccer. But the nature of the sport for some reason does not spark an interest in most Americans. Maybe it's the flopping, the low scoring games, tie games... who knows. I once read an article about how Americans were generally turned off by soccer in the 20th century because it is a foreign sport and is not "American," but that's a whole other debate. The US is more globalized now so maybe that's why soccer is becoming more popular here
slufan13
Every sports' playoffs will be exciting. Every sport can be boring. At least a boring soccer game lasts ~95 minutes. A boring baseball or football game lasts more than 3 hours.

Explain the ratings and how they can't compare to an average NFL game, because you'll lose the argument. And why you're at it tell us how your unders have been treating you the entire World Cup. You were so cocky about those. OK. World Cup "blockbuster" Sunday game, USA vs. Portugal, had 18M viewers, an average weekly Sunday night NFL game is 20 million. FYI, NFL playoffs are 30-40 million, the Super Bowl had 111 million. So here we have what is essentially a mini Olympics with just one sport, so watching soccer is suddenly a "cool" thing to do, the media stimulates it ad nausea, with our USA national pride on the line versus other countries, and what, only 18 million watch it. The so called # 1 sport in the world. Then when the World Cup is over, no one watches soccer. I root for SLU, we are always top notch, but national level teams and pro soccer in the USA have failed forever, so many keep saying it is "coming on"... hell, I wish I could have bought put options on the SL based (outdoor) professional teams that have come and gone since the 70's. I haven't bet the "unders" yet, though that is usually a winning proposition when both teams are credible and are still eligible, it is dangerous when foo foo teams from third world hell are playing, you never know. USA scored 4 goals in 3 games (yawning). Also when one team in the match is already eliminated they play relatively care free, aggressively and it will often go over the 2 or 2 1/2. There should be plenty of unders in the opening games of the whatever-you-call-it next round.
sludevil
So maybe this is close-minded/sexist/xenophobic/whatever, but I'm bothered by soccer players and the culture around them. The flopping and writhing around, the metrosexual (is that still a term? I don't know) haircuts and grooming - it doesn't jive well with "traditional" American masculinity, which is something I associate closely with sport. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of the sport itself - it's not the most exciting thing in the world - though I appreciate the strategy and skill involved, and I think it's cool that the whole world is participating in this thing. But then I turn on the TV and see guys who look like they spent the two hours before the game in the salon, and I see other guys being gently tapped (or not touched at all), and then hitting the ground like they've suffered a massive injury. And that just loses me completely. (And I realize that other sports aren't guilt-free in this area. Basketball has a flopping problem - and that bothers me, too - but no sport has these things to the same extent and in the same combination as soccer.) Maybe someday basketball or Hockey, but it isn't in the near future) is more kids are playing it and understanding the game. I can see if you haven't really played beyond 2 years in grade school, how you wouldn't find it exciting. However, most people I know who played the game to any real level enjoy it. As we get generations who's fathers played and then their kids play and they take them to games and they grow up involved ... it'll continue to increase. Had I not played, I wouldn't love it like I do ... I can watch a hockey game, but I don't love it as I don't understand all the rules and the nuances of the game

MB73
More entertaining than baseball. If baseball wasn't 'Americas past time' than that sport would get no love. I'm not a huge soccer guy but i would rather sit through 90 mins of running up and down a field instead of one person throwing a ball to another guy and someone trying to hit it with a piece of wood. God baseball sucks. Hockey and basketball are the best sports entertainment wise. I just don't understand the need for people who don't like it to come to a message board on a post about soccer ... and downgrade the sport. Many Americans love the sport, there is no denying that. I'm kind of half way watching and working, but it seems everytime I look up Brazil seems to be getting a break. There have been players booted in this tourney for a lot less of a foul than the one on the keep with his cleats up and head high. I thought he should have been sent off ... not sure it wouldn't have happened had it been the other way around
Zink
I'm kind of half way watching and working, but it seems everytime I look up Brazil seems to be getting a break. There have been players booted in this tourney for a lot less of a foul than the one on the keep with his cleats up and head high. I thought he should have been sent off ... not sure it wouldn't have happened had it been the other way around Other than the Jo foul (Howard Webb is notoriously lenient on high-boot calls), I thought Chile was given a fair shot from the ref. They got away with a lot in the first half, and it seemed to take one extra foul for the players to receive a booking than normal - and because Chile was playing a more cynical game, they naturally got the benefit. By the time the second half rolled around, both teams were being pretty chippy and Webb should have been a little harsher. The game turned into a stop and start scrum, which again naturally favored the Chileans. That said, I thought the match as a whole was officiated pretty fairly. Brazil didn't deserve to win this one, and it will be interesting to see how they respond in the next round. It will take a much better performance to beat Colombia (or even Uruguay). Colombia will be more willing to commit numbers forward than Chile was, so Brazil and Neymar might have more space to operate in, but James Rodriguez and Co will have more attacking talent than Chile, who relied so much on Alexis's tremendous skill on the ball to keep them in this game. Zink
So we beat a dissent ridden Ghana team, tied Portugal, and got shut out 1-0 by Germany? 1-1-1? We scored 4 goals in 3 games? And we still get "in"? I cannot believe that so many are pleased that we got in... now, Belgium? Soccer is not an interesting sport at all, nobody does anything that you notice, there rarely are any goals and they are usually accidents. So no one stands out or is under real pressure, 22 men out there playing shell "D". In baseball, if you strike out, everyone sees it. Basketball, you pump in 30 points, people take notice. Etcetera. Sure, The World Cup stimulates some nationalism, and so some bars are crowded with non fans, but the TV ratings for the Germany match weren't even as much as many regular season sporting events like NFL weekly feature games. I say, take off 3 players per team, make it 8 on 8, no off sides, then you have a sport with athletes playing full tilt, with their asses on the line, make a move or you get beat, go for it... instead of this boring 90 minutes + injury time (WTF?) 2 goals per game drudgery. (Ghana?) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK. SLUBALLS
Never understood the anti-soccer crowd's desire to constantly tell soccer fans how dissatisfied they are with the game or how it never measures up to other American sports. Fine...we get it....move on please. And while I agree with Coulter on some things, she is so off base on her article it's pathetic. Amazing how she can consistently makes an ass of herself. She's plenty smart but also so dumb. Anyway, looking to take a half day on Tuesday for the game and was wondering where people are setting up shop to watch the game vs Belgium? Plenty of soccer spots in St. Louis between Wash Ave, Clayton/Brentwood, Tower Grove, etc.
