Majerus ripping A-10

All the A-10 programs rip on the league. We have major level programs with mid major or worse management.

And Majerus never ripped on the players or the quality of the basketball. Just the travel and geography aspects of it. He made that known from his first press conference at SLU. Our league does put our team at a disadvantage. Right now though it is the best situation for us.

we should play out the next round of conference musical chairs. i think both the a-10 and the big east will realize that their two conferences should be three and good things will come from dividing accordingly.

for those of you thinking majerus wants to be in the mvc, when asked specifically about conferences at the mac luncheon, while i agree he didnt endorse the a-10, he suggested the big east, or the big ten or big 12. not one word about the mvc. i believe that majerus has bigger aspirations than the mvc.

and those believing the mvc is bigger than the a-10 are being very shortsighted. three years doesnt make it true. no denying that the last three years has been a victory for the mvc vs the a-10 debate, but for about a zillion years previous it was the opposite.

the difference is the a-10 has linda "i'm in over my head" bruno and the mvc has doug elgin. if the a-10 was smart they would fire bruno and break the bank on elgin.

the ONLY continuous advantage imo for the mvc over the a-10 is geography. there is no other reason to be in that conference.

I still think there will come a day when the BE implodes under 16 teams and so many of them being non D1 footballers. Not sure how that football revenue gets divied up, but if the 6 non D1'ers get some of the booty, that's got to be a sore spot for the D1 programs. It wasn't too long ago CT was a non D1 and then made the $$ commit to upgrade. You think they want to share those funds with Marquette, DePaul, etc. ? Doubtful.

The other option may be the formation of a new midwest conference as well. Drawing from the MVC, Horizon, A-10 the better programs. Although, the MVC is so old and established this may never happen. But wouldn't mind seeing something like: SLU, Dayton, X, Creighton, Butler, SIU, Whichita State, Missouri State and a few others. Not as sexy as the fantasy Papal Conference we'd all like to see, but better than what we have.

Basketball schools don't receive any football revenue. However, the league admitted that the tv contract for basketball (16 teams) and, believe it or not, football (8 teams) was larger per team for the 16 team conference than it would have been if the 8 football schools broke off and formed their own league. Evidently, having the bball schools in the conference increases the value of the football contract. My guess is because the Saturday afternoon BE football package is now available in cities like Milwaukee and Chicago, places where they were never available previously.

With the BE football league being so successful, talk of a split has been somewhat muted. In fact, the only public complaining has been now coming from the basketball coaches who were mad over the 6 bids the league received last year. On the other hand, the comments from all the Presidents has been giddy. Money makes everything good. In addition, the exposure is going to be incredible this year. Every BE confrence game is on an ESPN network and most of the schools will have every game or almost every game televised this season.

I still think the schools split, but I don't see it happening for 7-10 years. Further, it may not be a full split. The rumor last year in the MU athletic department was that the conference may scale back to 12 eventually, with 3 bball schools, ND and the 8 football schools.

I don't know how likely that scenario would be. The whole reason for the mega merger I thought was to get The BE up to the magic number of 12 for the BCS. Dropping to 8 football schools would mean no BCS Conference Championship game.

Huh? The BE only has 8 football school (plus ND, who doesn't play football in the BE). There is no reason for the BE to go to 12 football schools. None of the available candidates add any value to the tv contract. There is a chance that the BE might want a 9th football team for scheduling purposes, but that is about it. There is no requirement for a BCS conference to have 12 (PAC 10 and Big 10 don't).

In addition, the 8 football schools of the Big East are not exactly that tight.

Louisville and Cincy appear to have some distance issues with the other 5 teams in the Northeast. Louisville and its fans cannot be thrilled go to Syracuse, Rudgers and Connecticutt. Same argument as here with SLU and the A-10 - although they are much closer than St. Louis is to the Philly, etc.

But South Florida really appears to be a geographic misfit. Not only is there a distance factor, but southern teams are built on speed to play in the good weather. (EG - USC will not play ND (in South Bend) late in the year, Big 10 football teams (Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State... are built to play a more power game than the pass-oriented teams of the PAC 10).

Playing all your games up North in the cold is not all that attractive to USF (its players, recruits, fans, etc.). In contrast, the Northern schools (and their fans) probably look forward to the opportunity to travel/play in Southern Florida.

If USF got a better offer, they'd leave as fast as Miami did.

Of course any BCS school will leave the BE for another BCS conference. Why? More money. The BE is still the lowest paying football conference. That won't change unless and until the BE wins a national championship in football and/or gets regular mulitple BCS bids.

As for UL or UC being less than thrilled, you are simply uninformed. Louisville has been trying to get into the BE for 15-20 years. Their fans are overjoyed about playing in the BE. Louisville is relatively close to Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and WV. Same goes for UC. The fans are really excited. USF is a long trip, but all the BE schools recruit heavily in Florida. Also, all of the new BE schools are really excited about their new found access to the major northeast markets. Applications are way up at UL, UC, MU and DePaul. These schools have lots of alumni on the east coast, plus the BE has allowed them to step up recruiting. I know that MU just hosted a major alumni event in New York last week. It also ties major alumni events to when its teams are playing out east.

MU. Missing my point: the 8 football schools don't seem to be a natural fit. Conference USA had some good points but lacked in many other areas such as rivalries, geography, like-minded schools, decent football, etc. On the whole, I agree that the BE is good for Louisville and Cincy. Not surprised their fans have wanted to be in the BE for years. Same, of course, with DePaul and MU. Same arguments SLU has with the A-10 -- access and exposure to East coast media, access to new students and alumni on the East coast, etc.

As far as the 8 football schools, what am I missing? Not a natural fit and not the most stable group of football schools. Syracuse, Pitt an WV are the 3 good football programs. USF is new and has come of out of nowhere. Rutgers, until last year, has not been good in years. As to UConn, can honestly say I have never watched them play football and quite possibly never will. Don't see the rivalry, geography, etc. between Louisville and Cincy with that of Rutgers and UConn. Also, as mentioned above, USF will get tired of going North.

The A10 is not a well run league. That isn't a big secret. Majerus like anyone else would like to play in a BCS league, not much of a story.

exactly. now if anyone heard coach majerus say he wants to be in the mvc or the horizon, then those ripping the a-10 membership have something but otherwise this is not worthy.

Am I the only one that picked up a copy of Lindy's Basketball magazine?

SLU picked 3rd in A-10-we we are picked to fight it out for title with X and St. Joe's, Dayton, GW, UMass all ecpected to be good;

several other's mentioned to benefit from transfers and new recruits-the leagues coaches are touted as being superior

A10 picked as 7th conference after Big10

MVC further down the list-I truly don't recall but after SIU, Creighton, Bradley that is all, folks
