Piped in music

Recommended Posts

They don't need to listen to people that have been going to the games for 20 years. We are going to go anyway. They are trying to find a way to keep the students engaged and to keep the fans that are just now coming to the games.

The music isn't the problem isn't the music, its the students. I was plenty engaged as a student with just the band. I didn't feel like I needed to hear lil Jon or whatever would have been 2000-2004 2 chainz equivalent.

I'm ok in theory with piped in music, but they stopped us during Seven Nation right before tip to play Jump Around. Don't get me wrong, I love Jump Around. I was raised in Wisconsin. But that's no where near the place to play it. They already took away the Banner from the band (not complaining about that, that little girl was amazing), so let us play Seven Nation. Things were flowing, and the band sounded tight. Seven Nation is a under 4 in the first half song, not a tip-off song. About a dozen student in the student section jumped.

Well said and I agree.

What would solve this is if the band learned how to play more music. I love our band and it is good at what it does but it needs to play relevant music to go along with the school chants, etc. The younger generation doesn't get pumped listening to the stuff they have played for the past 50 years. I liked the combo of piped in music and the band. The athletic depth needs to find the right balance. Plus I think the bills won today.....lol!

More music? The band has around 90-100 songs in its repertoire. Always looking for suggestions, though, so if you have any post them or PM me. The band has added lots of "relevant" songs recently, i.e. Seven Nation, Runaway Baby, Poker Face, Dynamite and Everybody Talks. The problem is, most new music doesn't translate well to pep band. At least not like the classic rock and old jazz numbers that are our bread and butter, i.e. Big Noise, On Broadway, Funky Broadway, Superstition, Magic Carpet Ride, and Born to be Wild.

That looking for suggestions thing wasn't sarcastic, by the way. Mike brings out 5 or so new songs a year for us to learn

You wanna talk about a momentum killer, cutting off Seven Nation at the beginning totally deflated the initial enthusiasm in the crowd. We show up every game ready to play, and to have them cut us off like that was simply disrespectful. Mike is probably going to have a few words with the AD.

The crowd and student section were never into the game in the first half, they only got into it after realizing we were down with less than 10 minutes left. (say what you will, that is just my personal observation of the entire game).

The music they played didn't do anything to get the crowd going. At least, it didn't do anything that the band music doesn't already do.

But are they listening to the season ticket holder that goes to games against directional state, or the groupon crowd that wants homogeneous jock jams experience to "get pumped up"?

20+ year season ticket holder here - loved the music. Loved House of Pain. Got me more pumped up (not like I needed it). I loved the atmosphere today. Crowd was loud. Music made it MORE festive with more energy. Band is OUTSTANDING ALWAYS, but it doesn't hurt to mix it up.

Great. That's what works for you, but keep in mind there are a LOT of OTHER types of people in the crowd who have different views, different tastes, different motivations. I say deliver an experience that appeals to as many as possible. Clearly, without a doubt, the music got the crowd going today. Let's keep it, build on it, be more inclusive to different tastes and bring more people to CHAIFETZ!!!!

And that's the point. There is room for both. A significant portion of the audience wants to be pumped up by music that is not suited to the band. I am very loud during the games, frequently asked to calm down, but today I LOVED the music. It got me even louder (when I wasn't cursing the refs under my breath). Let's have a great band and great music.

Clearly there is disagreement. THE MUSIC DEFINITELY GOT THE CROWD GOING FROM MY PERSPECTIVE. I hope Mike and the AD read this thread to understand that there are different opinions and someone needs to be a leader and work on the right balance.

The problem will be when they start playing "too much" house music during timeouts. I mean every once in a while, fine, whatever. But cutting us off at the beginning was uncalled for.

And I was sitting right next to the students section obviously. Trust me when I say that more than half of them did not start really cheering until midway through the second half. The rest of the crowd did not even start standing up until the second half. The music clearly didn't do anything to significantly "pump people up" in the first half.

Well kiddo, I remember waaaay back in the early months of 2012, when Xavier was in town for the Blizzard. A great big crowd (sellout) showed up and it was a great game. At one important juncture in the second half SLU went on a "mini run" to open the lead and get some breathing room and the gangstas needed a t.o. The crowd went nuts and everybody was on their feet. Then they decided to strike up the band and take it to another level. Oh wait a minute, no thats not right. They played Jump Around by somebody's favorite one hit wonders, and they played it really loud. And guess what, everyone just stood there. Oh sure the students were waving their balloons vigorously, and a few souls (and I mean a very few), may have briefly tried to cut a rug, but that was it. Don't believe me? I was there. They took a picture and its on the souvenir cup you drank your diet soda out of today.

translation: Music is better. More music less band.
