Free degree

Nope.

It isn't free.

It has to be earned with a combination of ability plus numerous sacrifices, pressure, hard work, and extensive time dedicated to the success of the team.

So he had to pay money? Otherwise it's free. Every student makes sacrifices and dedicates time, chief. Nice try

I doubt you are a business major.

The players work all year, even in the off season, to play for our school. During the long season, there are countless meetings, plus practice, running, weight room, then games, all of those 72-96 hour road trips... do the financial analysis. Well, find someone who can.

I'd say they make about $ 25 an hour, give or take, but they deserve it.

And almost none make it to the pros to make any real money other than Larry the Legend so this work does not lead to a real future career.

And they miss so much of college life, especially a good social life and the team commitment makes it much more difficult to get top grades (yes some do I know but it is much harder).

Meanwhile, many non athletes sleep til 10, take 2 classes, then a nap, study for an hour or two, go out drinking, get back at 2am, go to sleep.

Weekends off.

Then b*tch about the team.

I guess I forgot that completing a degree offers you a lump sum of cash at the graduation ceremony...

I'm still looking for mine...

Better than debt? The players made a decision to become a student athlete. Don't b*tch about that decision after you graduate. Plain and simple. Plus Grandys got more hats than Lids

Your argument is that they signed up for it. I guess I'm confused if signing up for something automatically makes everything you signed up for right and just? Is there no middle ground to say yeah he got what he signed up for but can we all agree it's a terrible system?

I tend to agree with the northwestern football players on this one.

I don't necessarily agree. It's not the best but I don't see a better way.

I kind of look at the college basketball set up like an internship.

so all college basketball players should get a free pass to go to the NBA and make millions? I don't get the argument. What other students get paid to go to school? Once they graduate with a degree with no considerable debt they don't have to go play overseas or semi-pro making pennies a week. They could get a job like the rest of the world. And it's not like education or law school grads are making tons of money straight out of school, if they can find a job at all

After reading an excerpt from the book written by one of Kevin Stallings' players at Vanderbilt, I would argue that the perks that come with being a DI basketball player more than make up for the lack of a traditional social life.

That is disappointing. I have always been a big fan of Grandy's, but this leaves a bad taste. There are a lot of kids who work a ton of hours, stress out about paying for tuition, books, food, room and board, etc., but don't get the privilege of playing college sports. They don't get the benefit of the limelight and adulation of fans or the access to tutors and other academic support. And they often graduate not only broke, but in debt. Grandy needs a little perspective.

And they're getting screwed too. The richest country in the world should not be saddling its youngsters with debt.

Well, the standard of living those students have available to them is pretty incredible and all that hard work prepares them well for their future. That includes Grandy. Besides, no one is forced to go to an expensive school and take out a lot of loans; it's a choice. With good planning and hard work, it has historically paid off.

If Grandy got so screwed why did he sign up for another year of getting screwed after he graduated?

That is a very, very good point.
