Changes in College Ball

Stupid. Here's the rule change needed. Call ALL the fouls and palming violations.

-the timeout aspect I can understand but there are other ways of dealing with the amount of time that timeouts take, the rest do not make me want to attend or watch more college bball

-so effectively we will only have 3 timeouts next season??

I'm not sure what time warp the NCAA is using here, but a team has/had/used to have 5 time outs, one of which had to be used in the first half or else was lost. So a team could have as many as 4 to use in the second half. So I'm guessing they'll give a team 4 total next year (or some year, when/if they figure out what year it is.) BTW I don't know how the 30 second time outs work.

If they're trying to turn college ball into the NBA they'll soon lose me. 6 fouls?

That's where I am. As this gets closer and closer to the NBA, I will begin to lose interest. Soon we'll be playing the William Tell overture, or whatever, as our team brings the ball down the court.

A couple of things .....

1) the women already use the 30 second clock, right? On that level, I see no problem, but

2) this change, while only 5 seconds, will play really well into the hands of a team that presses (read VCU) especially against a team that uses a dedicated offensive scheme (read SLU). A press will force a team to use its 10 full seconds to cross half court. It will then have only 20 seconds to run an offensive set and, if it fails, less time to re-aim and run another. That will lead to some interesting panic at the end of a shorter shot clock. Fans of a certain team (read SLU) better like seeing more 18-foot heaves next year unless the summer does something for them.

I can think of a team heaving a lot of 18-footers to beat the shot clock last year (read SLU). Therefore, you are going to need a lot or at least a few guys who can take the ball in their hands with 5 seconds to go and do something (read Jett). This also plays into a certain team with a certain Nova transfer driving uncontrollably into the lane and falling into a rushed turnover (read SLU) just as much if not more than last year.

I do not believe this does much for the overall game except make it sloppier. Adding a sixth foul gives those pressing teams (read VCU) more of a chnace to clutch, grab and tussle even more. Wrestlemania comes to Chaifetz.

Totally agree with this. 6 fouls in 40 minutes basically invites a hackfest. Next thing they'll change the bonus to 20 fouls!

I do not find the NBA appealing to watch. I always feel like I am watching a bunch of guys just playing a relaxing pickup game, at least until the playoffs. College ball just seems to have 10x the passion and intensity. It would be interesting to see a poll of college basketball fans to see what they think of the rule changes. Maybe most are in favor?

I'm convinced that if most college basketball fans had an NBA team to root for they'd also be fans of the NBA. But when you don't have anyone to call for you naturally become disinterested and make statements like "I hope college basketball doesn't try to be like the NBA"

NBA basketball is really really good if you actually watch it.

I think that is a fair point. People root for terrible teams because they are THEIR team so I can see where having a local team could make the experience different. That said, I traveled to Denver a lot in my previous job and had the opportunity to see the Nuggets and get to know the team. However, I still just didn't see the same intensity and passion that I saw in college ball. Clearly, they are great athletes and incredible basket ball players - no debate, but it just seemed that at least some of the time, the players were just going through the motions.

Now, after all that, this will sound hypocritical, but I would still like to see St. Louis get an NBA team. :D

The Spurs and Golden State, in particular, play beautiful offensive basketball. The NBA is a copycat league so you're seeing more teams starting to share the basketball.

There's your problem. Watching the Nuggets.

But really I would suggest reading zach Lowe on grantland. He really makes you appreciate the small details of NBA basketball that I don't see in college bball.

Luckily I'm from an NBA city so I have a team to cheer for. I didn't pay attention to nhl at all until I moved to STL and had a team to cheer for
