Recruit (1/7)

  1. Firstly - Go Bills v. LaSalle! Secondly - right on MB!!! SLU would not get that much coverage (as Mi$$ou got today) if we won the entire dance! Does SLU get that amount of coverage in the Columbia newspapers? (yes, I know, Mi$$ou the represents the entire State of MO, while we only represent the St. Louis area) I still cannot figure out why many on this board kowtow to BM, JG and the rest of those PD clowns. Their claim to fame? Being an antler (wow, how impressive). Have you ever seen BM in person -he looks like an unmade bed. When is the last time he ever played a competitive sport? The only exercise he gets is running to and from the refrigerator. Until they learn to publish balanced views, opinions and perspectives, the PD, like all other dinosaur newspapers, will continue their financial spiral. It's just maddening that the ST. LOUIS post disgrace does not give SAINT LOUIS University athletics the same level of sports coverage as they do to Boone County Felons.
  2. Speaking of lousy officiating - did anyone hear about U of Louisana-Lafayette beating Western KY by 2 on a last second lay-up when officials and scorekeepers allowed Lafayette to play the remaining 20 seconds with six players? Sorry if this was posted OT on another thread.
  3. These three officials should ber precluded from ever working another HS level game in the State of WA. Roy, I coucur, what passes for a state certified HS basketball referee, on both sides of the river, is often times laughable, at best. As an experienced area referee, on #34's first foul - I call 2 shots and the ball, warning the King Tut look alike that if he commits a similar foul again, he'll be watching the remainder of the game from the locker room. #34 is using his entire arm as a weapon to injure the opponents; he is not attempting to block shots. He swings his entire arm, from the shoulder joint (as opposed to the elbow) in the general direction of the opponent, which could result in injury. He is not attempting to merely block an opponent's attempt at the basket. One opponent got hit in the head, the other was "clothes-lined", while in the air. #42 wraps his arms around the opponent during a rebounding situation, after that opponent is pushed from behind by King Tut. #42 has shown no intention in going for the basketball. #42's backcourt foul is even more egregious, as he pushes the opponent in the back, fully extending both arms, and then has the audacity to shake his head at the referee who makes a late call. Again, the push is intentional. This is "maul ball" at its finest. The sole intent of these two players is to intimidate the opponent; it is the referees who fail in asserting proper control to prohibit this injurious style of play. The coach should be admonished when claiming #34 is a victim. The only victims are the opposing players who were assaulted and could have been seriously injured.
  4. Does anyone recall the Ricky Clemons case? Did not this "student"/athlete, who grew up poverish, drive a new SUV?
  5. My goodness - BC has to borrow his roomate's car. How many D-1, top 30, BCS teams have seniors, who have to borrow a car? Anybody think Tu Holliday has to "borrow a car"? This program is so clean, it squeaks! We should all take great pride in these outstanding young men who represent the program!
  6. Hey Guys: SLU vs. Mi$$ery - It's simply a matter of easy math: If SLU beats Nova by 11 on a neutral court, and, Mi$$ery beats Nova by only 10 on a neutral cour, then: Consesquently, ergo, ipso, facto, per my most complicated rating and predicting formula, if those worthless, scandal plagued wussies from Columbia would actuall get the nuggies to play us, we'd win by 1 point, of course! That's as close as we can get to bringing closure to our SLU vs. Mi$$ery "who's the better team" argument for now.
  7. Cheeseman: I respectfully beg to differ. According to the great Larry Bird, "90% of all rebounds are taken below the rim." Out-rebounding your opponent is first and foremost about positioning. Having a group of kids who can leap out of the gym and run a fast 40 yd dash is helpful (if that in fact represents NH's definition of 'athletic'), but nothing replaces getting yourself between your opponent and the basket at every shooting opportunity.
  8. Roy: I'm absolutely amazed it took you so long to post your feelings on the Jim Crews hire. What young, (i.e., not over the hill) hip, flashy and top flight recruiting specialists would have been available, especially several days prior to the opening practice? Are you able to name any? Do you even know if any fitting your profile expressed interest? Crews had a remarkable run at Evansville; some might say he was more successful there than UB was @ SLU. He must have recruited some sort of talent to make Evansville that successful. Yes, Crews has the reputation of being demanding on his players; I don't know of many successful D-1 coaches who are not. Maybe you should go show interest in the local east St. Louis metro area Kindergarten sports programs, who have priority of post-game snacks and drinks as opposed to winning at the D-1 level.
  9. Metz - thanks for posting. One thing I notices: Excluding post season conference tournaments, what percentage of the schools to be televised are non-BCS schools?????? Anybody? Anybody? A few, (Georgetown, Marquette, but not a bunch of others), but the vast majority of the schools nationally televised will be BCS institutions.
  10. Here's a logical answer to your puzzling thought - The NDBL is known for taking 19 year olds who, 1) do not complete their four years of collee eligibiltiy, 2) who have grown to an approximate height of seven feet during those short 19 or so years on this planet, and then developing these players (e.g., a Willie Reed types)for NBA level competition. Over the next few years, these low post players will add muscle/weight, perfect low post moves, and develop a better range, all necessary tools for success at the NBA level. Alex Jensen has the reputation as one of the best 'big men' coaches around, which I personally was fortunate enough to witness at the pre-Canada trip open practices. It's a natural fit for Alex Jensen's coaching sweet spot. Guys - guess what happens to top college assistant coaches????? They grow up to become head coaches. If our assistants such as Jensen and the esteemed PM (who walks on water per NH) STOP receiving better career opportunities, THEN perhaps we should be concerned. By virtue of these career promotions continually beinng offered to our assistants, all signs ARE pointing in the right direction. Yes, Jensen and PM are going to be immediate losses to the program, but it's the nature of the D-1 coaching business. Yes, it's hard work being a Billiken fan. It's even harder work to make this institution have a top 50 (per the good Fr. Biondi's words) men's b-ball program, much less a top 20- 25 program, for which we all have been patiently awaiting. Given a true lack of financial commitment from the top of the school (Chaifetz and Majerus' salary largely supported by alumni donations), a holier than thou attitude, and outrageously strict sanctions for bad behavior, the odds are greatly against us from the start, and always have been.
  11. Coach Majerus is spending time with Patrick Ingram and family? Just a few weeks after heart surgery, and a few days after losing his mother? Wow, what a lazy recruiter. We all thougt he'd be spending his time during practice making fun of a player's hearing disability.
  12. TRIP REPORT: Got there a little after 2:00. I'm estimating there may have been some 50 fans in attendance. Yes, I have now drunk the blue kool-aid after watching the last 45 minutes or so of practice, and am predicting far bigger and better results versus last season. 1. As Chris May made the rounds at the end, I asked him about how RM was doing. He told me RM was getting antsy, as he loves coaching practice the most, but RM's health was well, all things considered. 2. I'm completely unaware of the recruiting abilities of the new Associate HC from Loyola, but he is certainly more than comfortable running a practice. I hope that comment doesn't upset the posters with their man crushes on PM, but I fail to see how we are any worse off now than we were last year when comparing the level of talent on our coaching staff. 3. RL - As posted previously on this thread, he showed significant improvement. While on offense, he crashed the boards on shots and worked hard on the defensive end to block out. 4. JB - yes, quite vocal (grunts a lot too - I know, TMI). The Aussie AC got on him a bit about his defense, especially when attempting to fight through screens ("Jake! You're making it too easy for him!"). He may not be quite the next coming of Larry the Legend many of us may had originally thought, but still quite a valuable asset, and could provide a real spark off the bench. Let's keep in mind, this will be only his second year of D-1 competition, and he will now play in a real conference (with all due respect to Butler). 5. CE - he could be 'da man! Defense improved (was he the one who knocked KM to the floor? I can't recall), and his shot seems to have returned. He looked great shooting both the 3 (pick and pop drill was great), and a low post fade away during the after scrimmage shooting drills. 6. Manning - Far better than Husak, Thompson, etc., at this stage in the game. He has some nice post moves, not afraid to mix it up underneath. He will fill out during the next 4 seasons. Not the outside shooter that RL is, at least not as of yet. I predict he may see some significant minutes (10) per game this year. I got to sit close to Manning and the AC (who played for RM @ Utah) after the scrimmage. They worked exclusively on low post defensive positioning. I learned a bunch about when to play a 3/4 fronting position when the ball is on the wing, and full front (butt front as RM calls it) when the ball is in the corner. 7. I witnessed a real clever, nifty under the basket in-bounds play I now plan on teaching to the youth teams I coach. Multiple screens and deception, with KM as the primary shooter; he must have made 9 of the 10 perimter shots he took from this play. 8. BC - what a beast down low, showed a bit of a perimeter game. I only wish he would refrain from pulling his shorts practically all the way up to his arm pits, with his shirt tucked in. His style sense made the old fans/retired men in the stands envious. 9. MM and JJ - great ball handlers, can drive and dish. MM drilled a three with defender on top of him. These both are an improvement over Smif and J. Jordan, in my opinion. 10. CR - stronger, more fluid. Let's hope for a break out year with better consistency. 11. DE - most impressive on both ends. IMHO, the sky is the limit for this great talent. 12. This team is extraordinarily well disciplined. They all communicate, on the court, extremely well, and are completely focused. RM will not be here forever. Let's truly support this group and enjoy these next couple of years; knowing our history, this level of competition and talent may not come around again for decades. Go Bills!!!!
  13. I did talk to one PT who was interning from SLU's program; she claimed no one was more aggressive at pushing athletes to return to action more than RM.
