Recruit

Recruit (1/7)

  1. He said a lot nice things about DePaul at the end of the interview. And he seemed to be giving his credentials to be able to recruit the Chicago area.... Just joking. I think this is all intended to be a "purpose pitch" at Biondi. He better be careful, as Biondi may go Juan Marichal on Majerus.
  2. Don't expect Knight to be wearing Maroon and White. I put the odds of it happening in the single digits, but it is fun to talk about. It is true that Knight and the O'Reilly family are good friends, but I doubt that Knight will make his next career decision based on his friendship with the O'Reillys.
  3. Your team is 1-1 against two middle of the pack Valley teams and that proves the A-10 "superior" to the MVC. Both conferences are upper-echelon Mid-Majors, neither conference is superior to the other. That is true now and has been true even in the past few years when the Valley is up and the A10 has been down. If the A-10 were unquestionably superior than the MVC, they'd not only have a better RPI but a much better RPI. They don't have either, the Valley's RPI is better than the A-10 so far. I get that you guys think there is disproportionate coverage of the Valley vs. SLU in the St. Louis market, but you really need to let it go. Play some golf, read a book, there's no need to keep taking shots at other conferences. That said, I'd think I'd rank the non-BCS conferences this season: 1. Mountain West 2. MVC 3. A-10, but they're all really close.
  4. Take a look at it now: http://www.kenpom.com/confrank.php?y=2008 The world is right again. I come on here from time to time to get info on St. Louis area recruits, but it seems like every other week there is a post taking shots at the Valley. What's up with that? I don't think I've ever seen a post tearing down the A-10 or any other conference in years of posting on the Missouri State board. Go Bears and Billikens!
  5. What's relevant isn't "Overall" as you say. What is relevant is how the teams have done since SLU's been in the conference. Since SLU has been in the A10, the Valley has had 6 bids compared to the A10's 4. The Valley has had 3 teams reach the Sweet 16 (3 different schools: Bradley, Wichita, SIU). The A10 hasn't had a team reach the Sweet 16 since 2004. If you want to compare "overall", the Valley's history compares with any other. The Valley, SEC, and Pac10 are the only three conferences who have had teams that repeated as champion. I'm not arguing the Valley is a "significant" step up from the A10. But the Valley is better positioned for the future IMO, because Elgin is a much better commissioner than whomever the A10 has (see CSTV deal.) Both conferences are mid-majors, and both will have ups and downs.
  6. I'm not one who thinks that the Valley is inherently "stronger" or "better" than the A10. We had two years recently when we were up and the A10 was down. The Valley and the A10 are both mid-majors, and recently the Valley has been better than the A10. Not because of attendance, but because of better basketball. Both conferences had the same number of bids, but the A10 would've had just one bid if Xavier wins the conference tournament. The Valley also had a team in the Sweet 16 (3 teams in 2 years) that almost took down #1 Kansas. Conferences have upswings and downswings. And that's okay. There isn't any need to rip on another conference. No unbiased national source believes the A10 "dwarfs" the Valley.
  7. I've been following your board lately to keep up with the Majerus watch and the coaching search. Would a move to the Valley b/c of Majerus further undercut Levick as AD? Just a month and a half ago she was on Bernie's show building up the A10 and tearing down the Valley. She spent a lot of time talking about how successful the A10 has been in comparison to the Valley over the past 15 years while largely ignoring the comparison of the two conferences since SLU joined the A10 (which is really where the comparison is relevant to SLU). I also wonder if SLU could really reverse field so soon after the move to the A10. I always thought a dream conference would be this one: SLU, Dayton, Xavier, Marquette, DePaul, Loyola (Chi), Detroit Mercy, and Creighton. As a Valley fan I'd hate to lose Creighton. However, as a Catholic basketball fan that would be a fun conference. In February when Lent starts, you could have a Friday Game of the Week. No meat would be served in the arena, of course. (Sell fish sticks, cheese pizza, and nachos.) The trick would be getting DePaul and Marquette to come aboard, but there would be fewer travel issues for all schools involved.
  8. I'm not one to bash players, but I'm telling you guys you don't want Frazier. He quit the team twice (came back once) and I don't think he's truly committed to playing basketball. Beyond that, he plays like a 3 rather than a 5. I'd probably start Husak over Frazier, but that's just me. He started 17 games as a Sophomore, and averaged 15 minutes per game. That was his best rebounding season and he averaged just over 4 per game. I totally agree that we misused him and probably shouldn't have recruited him. He just doesn't fit our team. That said, it seems as if you guys will have an extra scholarship for 2007 that you want to have open for 2008. If that's the case, Sky would be a good fit. He would at minimum provide added depth.
  9. I really don't have that much of a problem with Missouri State being left out this season. I thought we should've been in ahead of Stanford and Arkansas, but it was close. Last season I thought we got the shaft, but this season the coin came up tails when we called heads. The frustrating thing for Bears fans, and the fans of all mid-majors actually, is the shifting standards for selection. Last season, several Missouri State fans e-mailed the chair of the selection committee (Littlepage) and asked how could a team with a 21 RPI possibly be left out of the tournament. To his credit, he wrote back and said we didn't have any marquee wins. He said teams in the 30-40 RPI range with a marquee win deserve in before a team with a top 25 RPI. This season, we had an RPI of 35 and a win over Wisconsin. We still didn't get in. Basically, the selection committee will use any excuse it can to get a BCS school in. Just the facts of life, I guess.
  10. I'm not here to start a fight (that's why I won't respond to the "Mid-Major Bid Trend" thread.) I just wanted to congratulate you and your kids (especially the seniors) on a good season. I know you wanted into the NIT, and I think you should've been in. Have a good off-season, and I look forward to our game in Springfield next season.
  11. I'm not going to argue which league is better, because its not just about basketball. I think the Valley has defintely been better than the A10 in recent years, but arguing over which will be better in 5-10 years is impossible. One factor in the Valley's favor, however, is in the Commissioner's office. More than the coaches who leave, I am most worried that Elgin will leave the Valley.
  12. "I look forward to Frazier being our starting center next year." I look forward to that too.
  13. Notice I said "then-SMS." For those of you without a handle on the English language, that means it was named SMS when I chose to go there. I figured people who got into SLU knew how to read. My mistake.
  14. Does it not bother you that you won because the clocks in your own building are not synchronized? Wouldn't you rather win it because your players performed better than ours?
  15. Actually, I got accepted to both schools and chose then-SMS. However, I'm currently a graduate student at SLU and both are great schools. This is my favorite argument of people who disagree: "You couldn't get into my school." Yeah, everyone who disagrees with you must be less intelligent.
