Recruit (1/7)

  1. Hey folks! I hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving. I'm sorry that the Billikens lost to Missouri St. I was pulling for you guys. Anyway, now that the Missour St. game is over I thought I'd return and give Billiken fans the scouting report on my Pacific Tigers. The Tigers are currently 4-1, but Tiger fans are looking forward to the game tomorrow to give us a better barometer of where the team truly is at this point. With that said Tiger fans like this Tiger team. Last year the team struggled after probably the most successful 3 year stretch in the program's history. This year's seems to have bounced back to form. The Tigers have good depth, athleticism, scoring, and rebounding. This is probably the best rebounding and shot blocking team the Tigers have had in the 13 years I've followed the program. It's probably the most athletic, which considering the level of play in the Big West may not be saying much. The team has a lot of balance offensively, not a tremendous amount of size along the frontline. The team struggles a bit with turnovers and perimeter defense. Below are links to the Tiger's roster and season stats. http://pacifictigers.cstv.com/sports/m-bas...baskbl-mtt.html http://www.bigwest.org/admin/stats/data/mbball/pac.htm So far the Tigers are averaging 81 ppg, 36.2 rpg, while shooting 52.5%FG, 76.9%FT, and 44.8% 3FG%. As far as personnel go here is how the Tigers breakdown. GUARDS Steffan Johnson is the team's starting point guard and the team's leading scorer so far this season. He had a great weekend at a tournament up in Oregon to start the year off, and he's starting to come back down to earth a little bit. Plus the team has a lot of balance offensively, so he hasn't taken as many shots the past couple of games. He's a very good shooter and he's explosive offensively. He sometimes tries to make too much happen and is turnover prone. Defensively he's a decent player. Chad Troyer is the team's starting two guard. A transfer from Miami (OH), he's a good shooter, although he has a low release point on his shot, so he sometimes struggles getting his shot off against quick opponents. Another decent defender Mike Kirby is the first guard off the bench. He's quick and a good spot up shooter. A good defender and despite the fact he is a juco transfer he's seemed to make the transition to DI play very quickly. He has a good feel for the game. James Doran is probably the next guard off the bench. He's a juco transfer, and he's a good shooter. CJ Morgan is another reserve guard. He's a very streaky shooter. In his college debut out of high school he light up New Mexico St. last year for 23 points at their place, and then was up and down the rest of the season. He probably won't see all that much time against St. Louis. FORWARDS Joe Ford is the Tigers starting small forward. He's about 6'6" with a 7' wingspan. His stats don't jump out at you, but he's a Tiger fan favorite because he's one of those players who just makes good things happen. He doesn't have a very good shot, so he just scavenges for his points. He'll get a handful of points, a couple of offensive rebounds, a couple of steals, and a block or two every game. He's probably the team's best on the ball defender so he might be matched up with your team's best guard/small forward. Terrell Smith is a 2G/SF. He's probably the Tigers highest rated recruit ever. He was the Seattle Player of the Year last year and lead the Seattle area in scoring. He's a tremendous athlete, but he had a leg injury early in the season and missed a bunch of practice time, so he's a bit behind in learning the system. I wouldn't think he'll get much time against St. Louis. Anthony Brown is the team's starting power forward. He's the teams returning leading scorer and was an all conference selection. He's struggled a little bit at the beginning of the season as teams keyed on him, but seems to be getting his rhythm back as of late. He has some good post moves and has a knack for getting fouled and going to the free throw line, where he shoots the ball pretty well for a big man. He's also extended the range on his jump shot out to about 15'. Last year he couldn't defend a chair but he's a little bit better this season. He's also a pretty good rebounder, but he's a bit undersized at about 6'7". CENTERS Mike Nunnally is the team's starting center. He's a juco transfer and he was the Northern California juco player of the year/co-POY in California. He's a good athlete, rebounder, and shot blocker. He gets most of his points from scraping and he's a so-so free throw shooter. He's a little undersized for a center at about 6'8" Bryan LeDuc is the 1st big man off the bench. He's a PF/C. He's also a juco transfer and like Joe Ford he's another player that just makes good things happen. He does a little of everything. He's a mormon and has done the mission thing. He's also married, so he's older and a bit more mature and that comes through in how he plays the game. Sam Willard is probably the next big man off the bench. He's a freshman from South Dakota of all places. How a California school got a kid from SD is beyond me, but he's been a pleasant surprise for Tiger fans. Tall and lanky, he plays with good energy. He's still developing so I'm not sure how much time he'll get against St. Louis. Casey Neimeyer is another PF/C type. He's a banger who can step out and shoot the 3. DeAngelo Garrett is another PF/C type. He is the most bulky player on the team, but he's at the bottom of the depth chart so I don't expect him to play much against St. Louis. Tiger fans are looking forward to a good game tomorrow. Except for your 7 footer I think the Tigers matchup pretty well against the Billikens. I know that Coach Majerus loves to exploit mismatches so it will be interesting to see how the Tigers respond to Husak. If any billiken fans who live outside of the St. Louis area want to chat during the game, us Tiger fans usually have a chat going and any of you are welcome to join us. You can find the link to our chatroom on the Pacific board. Good luck tomorrow, but not too much luck. Go Tigers!!!
  2. Greetings everyone! Pacific fan here. I know the Billikens have a big game coming up against Missouri St., however following that game the Billikens will be taking on my beloved Tigers. I just wanted to come over to this board and invite any fans who wish to talk about the Pacific game with Tiger fans over to Pacific's message board. www.pacifictigershoopstalk.com I'll come back in a few days and post a Pacific scouting report for Billiken fans. I'd appreciate it if a knowledgeable Billiken fan could do the same over on the Pacific board. Good luck on Wednesday and I'm looking forward to the game on Saturday!
