JC Hot Seat

Might be fun to have a running thread for this. Or not. Who knows.

To start though, does JC keep his job if we finish .500 or worse? Is this even a debate to be had?

Conversely, is anything better than .500 a lock for him to return the following year? I'd think so, with our administration.

Really? Is this a topic you really want to talk about even before the season begins??? Hopefully our players and recruits aren't reading this Board at this time. Personally. I don't think this topic is "fun" to use your word.

Geniunely curious to what the answers to the above would be. We could be decent this season, that would be nice. Or we could suck again, like this board. If it's going to be the former, I'd at least like a coaching search to look forward too. Feel free to respond with cheery optimism. Or just lock the thread.. It's a message board..

Also yea, God forbid the coaches or players get the sense that some serious improvement is needed/expected this season. I'm sure they really give a too.

There are all kinds of armchair generals or armchair presidents that truly think they can do better than the people sitting in the hot seat. These are power fantasies, no more, it makes the person having the fantasy of doing it "better" feel a borrowed, certainly not real, sense of power and entitlement. I would say, let Crews do his job his way, and let the administration do their job their way. Results will speak for themselves once we get to the playing season.

....and your little poll is going to help the coaches and players finally become enlightened to the fact that they need to be better this year. Well done. We all know they didn't "give a ######" before your brilliant little poll! Ya, right.

If you are going to start trash threads like this you should take the late & Great Coach's name OFF of your username. I have some suggestions if you need something with much less class.

Richmond Times-Dispatch did an early A-10 preview today and picked us last. Of course, the writer doesn't know we've got Elliot Welmer coming to Crews' rescue. I liked what I saw from him in the exhibition games with his excellent hands and craftiness around the hoop. I think he's going to surprise folks this season.

Wondering if he won't be the diamond in the rough big guy we've been looking for for quite a while. Granted, it's just three games, but I remember from the mid-90s Ga. Tech had an unheralded recruit named Matt Harpring who shocked everyone with how skilled he was. In trying to compare what I saw from Welmer this week, Harpring was the player who came to mind.

If Welmer or Neufeld come in and "rescue" Crews it'll be the first time in SLU history that a Billiken big man comes in ready to kick arse. I don't remember Bonner as a freshmen but I guess Cody would be as close as we've come to that in my lifetime.......

Barring complete collapse or discipline problems, Crews has this year and next. Whining and crying about it won't make it any better. If Crews doesn't make to tournament NEXT year, he's gone...........

I don't see SLU letting him go earlier than this, either. He signed a 5-year contract and this is year 3. SLU isn't going to eat $1.7 million to let him go and then sign someone else for at least as much money.

So while I would say another performance like last season represents a true "collapse" for the program, it's a lot of money they're not going to eat.

It is not as much about the money as it is about giving Crews a legit shot to build the program his way. After the '13 class the program was left in shambles. Ash was the only usable piece remaining at the program. This is a total rebuild of a mid-major which does not happen over night. Intelligent people understand this.

But not all intelligent people agree whether Crews is the right guy to successfully rebuild this program. Crews was hired for continuity purposes not to rebuild a program, I certainly question his ability to do so.

Anyone know what we would owe him if fired 8 months from now? Would we really have to pay that entire $800k or whatever his full annual earnings are or is there a more reasonable base salary that we would just owe him?

I don't understand this. I don't think anything on this board affects/helps/hurts anyone related to the program. Remotely. This is a fan board?

Did not realize everyone would tweak after reading a couple hypothetical situations. I said if we're over .500 he's all but assured of returning. I definitely didn't call for his head, and people saying "support the team" ... Thanks for your input, though I'm not sure the correlation you're implying is accurate. I'm psyched that everyone has lowered their expectations for this season so much.

I literally based the thread on hypothetical scenarios involving the results of this season. It's the offseason. The board is dead. It's conjecture season.

Truly think they can do better? Lol, that's a pretty huge leap from my post. I thought I worded it as tamely as possible, but let's not discuss, nor even speculate about the most important person related to our program's success.

Completely agree. I don't think many people are all too confident about Crews' ability to turn slu into a consistent tourney team. If he is not capable, then we are basically wasting another 2 seasons.

I completely disagree with your post and starting this thread. However, I would agree that your getting unfairly beat up. It's the offseason and if you can't post a stream of thought that you're having on a board that was established to have discussions, then that's crazy. I guess sensitivity is high right now. That happens around here from time to time.

I agree and will now refer to him as Obama Mojo

Question: how long has Crews been at the helm of this program?

Answer: by my count, four years. We all know Majerus' last recruit was Keith Carter. Correct me if I'm wrong. Then we got Jared Drew to close that year out. Drew was from Indiana. Like Crawford. Like Welmer. So isn't he on Crews (and staff)? The next year, Crews is interim coach and we get Lancona, Agbeko and Crawford. Last year was all Crews so he gets Reynolds, Roby, Jolly, Gillmann, Yarbrough and Bartley. This year, it s Neufeld, Welmer and Bishop and we add Hines. So the only non-Crews guy on this roster is Yacoubou, who was quoted as liking SLU after we dismantled Nova in Anaheim (which was a Majerus-produced team).

The point of the answer is all we have is laid at the base of Crews' feet. If he has recruited talent, I don't see it. If he has recruited skill, I don't see it. If he has recruited in order to develop said talent, I don't see that yet either. I am not calling for his head, but the evaluation parameters are set and right now, they don't appear to be promising.

If SLU were to fire Crews that would be completely opposite of their demonstrated modus operandi. The only time they have canned anyone out of the ordinary process was Soderberg with an asterisk placed beside that because of Chaifetz and Majerus. The Bahama trip and games were very hard to fathom because of the competition, unruly play, raged refereeing and 24-second shot clock. I might have even preferred to lose games just so we showed something that resembled a direction we are headed in this year. So I came away with no real clue what to expect. The door is wide open.

Deaux.
