Marcus Relphorde was part of the first class that Majerus got rid of and went to Colorado and averaged 11 points a game for 2 seasons on a team that made the NIT Final 4.

Jon Smith left and went to Ohio where he played about 20 minutes per game and was more of a defensive force, including being on a team that went to the Sweet 16.

Other than those, I agree and I think it shows that Majerus basically had a policy of pushing out the lower rung guys while keeping the best players. Its undoubtedly part of the reason we ended up with such a strong nucleus for our 3 year run.

The key with transfers is making sure the guys that leave are the ones that you want to leave and not ones that are "recruited" by bigger programs. There is absolutely no inside info here but I worry that our two juniors will be recruited as they both may be immediately eligible for transfer if they graduate after this year. Given some people's thoughts on them, maybe that isn't a horrible thing, but I tend to believe we can still be decent next year if the right players all come back.

Doh. Good call. I should have thought about that for more than 20 seconds.

Right, on both counts. And didn't Relphorde end up playing the position Majerus wanted him to play?

If I remember correctly he ended up playing more of a wing at Colorado which imo is what he should have been playing in the 1st place. RM wanted him as a 4 and I don't believe it was because he was necessarily suited for it as that was better for our team at the time. MR never seemed to embrace the role or look comfortable. For the team RM was probably right, for MR I believe he was wrong

@Illinois_Irish: 2015 G 6'6 Christian Williams will have Missouri & St. Louis in tonight to watch his game, depending on weather! #IrishFam

From two days ago

Potential to be the the wing scorer we need. I believe is good friends with Bartley

On the IL side it appears we're recruiting Stamps and Williams for 2015.....may have missed this earlier in the thread but does anyone know if we're pursuing Franklin from O'Fallon?

I don't believe so. I have heard he is receiving interest from the local mid-major programs like SIU-C and SIU-E though. It looks like he has offers from Jacksonville State, Tennessee State, and SIU-C. I have heard he is a nice looking athlete with good length, I will get to see him next weekend.

If they are being recruited by SLU, evidently, either some players have notified the staff they are leaving or the staff has notified certain players their scholarships will not be renewed. That's too bad. I wonder what Lancona and Reynolds are thinking about getting so little playing time on a team as bad as SLU has been. It's one thing to sit because of seniors, but to sit because freshmen have beaten you out is probably a big blow to Lancona's confidence.

At some point he has to give them a reason to put him in. He hasn't done that.

Not at all. But you have to keep recruiting in case things don't work out with someone.

Transfer numbers are up everywhere. Reasonable to expect we'll get hit with 1 to 3 this year. 3 would be above the norm, except for Mizzery. Is JC like RM and likely to say, "we're not a good match, so you'd be better off looking elsewhere", or will he leave it up to the player? One would have to think TL is giving this some serious thought, since he can't seem to buy a minute of floor time. Plus, he's pretty far from home, so why not transfer to where he could get some time? As for the others, who knows. I don't see RA or the two JR's leaving. I'm just hoping that the core FR are going to stick it out despite the frustrations w/ all these losses. JM can transfer today. A complete bust. Husak was better and that's not saying much. If some of the core group look elsewhere, the program's in trouble, because that would mean they're just not buying into what JC's selling. They'd be giving up guaranteed playing time for the great unknown of the grass is always greener on the other guy's lawn.

Anyone know anything about how Nuefeld & Welmer are doing?

I looked up Sunrise Christian Academy and Nuefeld isn't even on their roster. I thought that was where he was supposed to be attending this year.

The only thing I found about Welmer was a tweet that said he's considered the number one prospect out of Maine this year. Hope that's better than the Montana Player of the Year. That and he's listed as 6' 9", 210 which is up from 6' 8" , 175 in high school. Hopefully that's accurate and he's muscling up.

SLU 72 JM is a Senior, he will graduate. Yes he is not good although he can defend and he can make a few baskets. JM's hands are soft and he drops passes and rebounds. GG is not going to play again, not for us, he will also graduate. If he has any availability time left, he might be able to get a 1 year scholarship for his Master's work and play elsewhere. I think a D2 level school would be a better place for him as the presumably lower level of play might provide some extra protection for his shoulder. Obviously, after spending a lot of time in rehab for his shoulder, he does not want to ruin all of the work done.

About Wellmer and Neufeld, we will find out next year won't we?

Next year, Neufeld and Welmer are both 2 star freshmen centers. They are going to have the same adjustments that AG and BJ made to Crews/D1/going to class, etc. Anyone who thinks that one of these 2 will come in and outproduce the current guys onthe roster is drunk on koolaid. If we are going to blossom, it is going to be done with this same core getting more comfortable together.

Our lack of point guard is killing us right now.

I guess I'm drunk on koolaid. I expect Neufeld to come in and contribute immediately. I keep hearing he's a "high major recruit" (Evan Daniels' words, not mine) who we got to commit before bigger schools came calling. Depends on what Gillmann and Jolly do this offseason, but he could easily be our best option at center next year.

Next year we just need enough production out of the starting center position to keep defenses honest. I'm optimitstic that Gillmann plus 15 lbs over the summer will be able to give us that. Right now we're playing 4 on 5 on offense. SLU has always had a tough time attracting freshman centers who could be meaningful contributors right away, even with Majerus at the helm. We build centers here, we don't recruit them. The construction project doesn't aways work out -- Manning being a prime example. The schools that recruited Neufeld before he ever went to prep school lead me to believe there's less construction required this time around.

It's tough for lead guards like Bartley and especially Reynolds to come from programs loaded with athletes. When you sign on with SLU you're not going to be able drop dimes to high-flying forwards. We play station to station halfcourt basketball here. When you're winning wars of attrition with experienced upperclassmen, it's "disciplined basketball". When your best players are freshmen and you're struggling to score, it's just ugly. Keep in mind the style of play SLU has been known for the last 25 years when you question why 6'5-6-7' skilled, athletic wings and forwards don't come play here.

As for Welmer, here's some articles about his adventures out East. Obviously I haven't seen him play in person but I like the trend line here. As a junior at Columbus North Welmer averaged 7.5 ppg and 3.7 rpg. As a senior he averaged 15.6 ppg and 7.8 rpg. As a prep, he's clearly the best player on his team and has shown the ability to score against other bigs headed to D-1 programs. If he continues his progress, Reggie's spot in the rotation is in jeopardy.

If Nuefeld & Welmer aren't better than Gillmann & Jolly, how many projects can a roster withstand?

With Gillmann, you can definitely see possibilities with his passing, 3 pointers and occasional rebounds and put backs.

With Jolly I haven't seen a sign of anything he is good at, besides free throws. We may be developing another Manning.
