In addition to the Tweets above, an update on Gillmann:

Oakville is 2-2 heading into the Collinsville tournament. Gillmann is averaging 18.0 points and 9.5 rebounds. He was at 5.3 blocks per game through the first 3, but I'm not sure how many he had against Springfield SE.

Sarajilic is now averaging 19.3 after that outburst against Springfield SE. He's also averaging 7.5 rebounds. No one else on the team averages above mid-single digits.

If you haven't clicked on VeniceMenace's link above, I recommend it. The last 40% or so of the article is about Reynolds, his improvement in the offseason, and how well he's playing this season for Whitney Young.

White Station is now 10-0 after sweeping through 4 games at the Iolani Prep Classic in Honolulu. Roby scored 10, 9, 8, and 4, respectively. WS plays again on 1/7 in a conference game against Overton. Again, Roby's scoring totals are of little concern, given the amount of D-I talent on the roster. They spread it out quite a bit, aside from 26 and 22 from Leron Black in the last 2 games.

Leron Black and Chris Chiozza, right?

Play-by-play of the game between Mac and Urbana: http://www.wdws.com/audio/2013-12-20/urbana-vs-decatur-macarthur-12-20-13.html

From the Champaign News-Gazette:

URBANA — Moaso Bumba and Korrion Taylor didn’t overwhelm Decatur MacArthur with their scoring.

But Urbana doesn’t pull out a 61-58 win Friday night at Oscar Adams Gymnasium without those two.

Bumba supplied lockdown defense against Saint Louis University-bound guard Marcus Bartley (12 points). And Taylor distributed six assists in his first game of the season.

“We had great energy from guys off the bench,” Urbana coach Vashoune Russell said. “We played some defense we’ve been trying to play all year as far as being able to get after people.”

The Tigers used an 11-0 run late in the third quarter to hold off the Generals. Marcus Catchings (21 points, nine rebounds) and Conner Gremer (19 points, seven rebounds) provided all the scoring Urbana needed.

@JettFlight5 - yes, Chiozza and Black. Black is leading the team in scoring. Chiozza is running the point, with Roby playing the 2, from what I can tell. They're scoring roughly the same amount. They also have a kid named Curtis Phillips who signed with Campbell; he's had a couple big scoring games but otherwise is usually good for 6-8 points.

They're very good, very experienced, and very deep. They don't have a true center (or anyone who projects to play the 5 in college, more accurately), but have a lot of guys in the 6-6, 6-7 range. Otherwise, the team is loaded at every position.

If that's the case, he's averaging 18.0 and 10.3 (instead of 9.5). Not a huge deal at this point, but nice to make it an official double-double.

Also, a reminder that the Schnucks Collinsville Tournament starts today and runs through the weekend. GOSEETHEKIDSPLAY. Bartley and Gillmann in one place; I expect to see some scouting reports!

What's interesting to me based on your write-up about Bartley is how different the circumstances are for each of our signees.

-Bartley is the best player on an average high school team. He's a point guard, but since he's taller than the other kids he has to play out of position on the defensive end. He's asked to do everything offensively, as well, so he takes more shots than he otherwise would but has developed a strong ability to drive to the basket.

-Roby is one of four seniors in the White Station starting lineup signed with a D-I school. He's starting at the 2 and rarely is asked to play out of position. He hasn't been heavily relied upon all season because of how much the team is able to spread it out. They're 10-0, and despite a few relatively close margins of victory, it doesn't seem like they've been greatly challenged yet.

-Gillmann is on a somewhat-above-average high school team and one half of a frontcourt that scores the majority of the team's points and grabs nearly every rebound. Oakville's guards don't do much at all in comparison, and without their 4 or 5, would struggle mightily as a team.

-Reynolds is one of three D-I starters on Whitney Young and plays with the best high school player in the country. So while he isn't necessarily counted on to be the star, he's been called their best player so far (by Okafor and others) because of his improvement in the offseason, high IQ, leadership, and energy.

-Jolly is on a very strong team, as well, in a prep program that produces D-I talent every year. He hasn't done much at all yet and they're 5-1.

I'm not sure how all this will translate: Does the fact that Reynolds is tearing it up on a loaded team against top-flight competition mean he's better than we realized? Does the fact that Jolly and Roby haven't done a whole lot on their loaded teams mean they're going to take longer to contribute at the next level? Is Bartley not as good as his numbers indicate because he's got to be the man every night, or is the fact he's being forced to do everything developing him sooner and better for college?

This is a really interesting class. None of them have me over-the-top excited but I could see all of them being solid players, too.

Reading Earl Austin Jr.'s tweets from the Oakville / Bellville East game it sounds like Oakville was playing well and Gillmann had 12 at the half. The wheels fell off in the second half with the refs completely screwing Oakville and Gillmann.

I'm in Collinsville now and saw Gillman play. By no means was the game affected by the refs. He sat out 3/4 of the 3rd quarter with 2 overall fouls (no idea why) and Belleville East took over. Oakville's guards are horrible and Reddick from East completely owned the 2nd half.

Overall Gillman 100% will need to redshirt. He's a stick. I don't think I'd call him athletic, but he's certainly not a stiff. I think he'll be a role player for us, but I wouldn't expect anything more unless he dramatically improves.

I'm just saying, "dramatic improvement" is generally seen by most 6'11" big men who become more than role players. I'd say there are way too many variables in Gillman's future to pinpoint what type of player he will be down the road. Hopefully he can redshirt, add some muscle and learn the system and after that who knows how he will be.

The tweets from the game said he got his third foul, and second ticky tack foul, at the beginning of the third quarter so I would guess that is why he sat out. We all need to understand that kids that tall at a young age will often have to take two or three years to grow into their bodies. I know the staff feels that he and Jolly have the potential to be contibutors in the future with some added weight and time working with the staff. As with our young guards it will be most interesting to see how they develop over the years. Based upon my earlier observations over the years it is really difficult to judge the talent of young big men when they play with less than stellar guards and with high school refs who often favor the smaller guys almost like they have some sort of need to even things out because one guy is much taller.

Oakville won two games over the past few days over mc cluer north and Chicago Marshall. Gillman had 26 against MN in a rematch of an early season game won by MN. He had 29 against CM. I could not get stats on rebounds or blocks. Decater M won two games to win the consolation championship but I could not find any reported stats except that Bartley had 25 in the one point win over Springfield SE.

Hey, Torch, do you have any information on Gillmann's running buddy? (The other big on his team) What year is he and is he high major D1 material? In playing against North and Marshall he saw a lot of speed and quickness and that should help his progress. (Especially if he continues to play against that kind of competition)
