I'm back

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to post an invitation to board members to join me at local high school basketball games. The lone wolf routine is getting old. It's time for me to come out of my shell. I don't get out as often as I used to but I still try to make marquee matchups on weekends. I'll post the game(s) I'm going to at least 2 days in advance.

The recruiting pendulum is beginning to swing in favor of St. Louis area kids so if we could get multiple board members at these games, I'm sure the community would appreciate it. Personally, I fcous on the 2016 players when I go to games. The sophomore and particularly, the freshman class, while they appear to be dynamite, are too far away for fans to worry about from a recruiting standpoint. Let the kids be kids. I'm sure there's at least one kid who will blow up between now and then that we're not even talking about today.

As you know, my hobby is evaluating 3 star and potential 3 star recruits. in the junior class, I think Xavier Sneed and Brendon Gooch fit the bill.

I went to SLUH Monday afternoon and took in the CBC/Webster Groves game and the Hazelwood Central/SLUH game.

CBC/Webster Groves

The game itself turned into a free throw shooting contest with both teams fouling incessantly. Really ugly game to watch, but Webster got the 3 point win in what turned into an exciting ending. I think Webster Groves is probably the better team by 8-12 points, but CBC really battled and turned it into a fight. Webster has some really quality players in upperclassmen Stephen Harris (long and quick scoring guard), Alex Floresca (big strong physical post player), Cam Hilton (a strong gifted athlete), Sam Craig (lights out shooter), and Leland Bradford (quick point guard). The freshman, Courtney Ramey, played in spurts and showed potential scoring some points and showed the ability to penetrate, but forced the action a little too much and is just not big enough to consistently finish going to the basket at this point, but definitely worth following (the kid is a lot longer and taller than I had anticipated). I would think Webster is the 2nd best team in the area behind Chaminade. CBC was led by their junior guards, Christian Willis and Jordan Barnes, and their senior big man Kenny Lesley who has no ability to finish when contested in the paint. Christian Willis was definitely CBC's best player and brought CBC back into the game with a big run early in the 2nd half. He has a real solid offensive game and seems to be at his best attacking off of the bounce, solid finisher and strong. He is definitely deserving of mid-major offers, but is limited by his size (only 6'2 if that). Jordan Barnes scored a lot of points, but did most of his damage drawing fouls and making free throws. I personally don't see him being deserving of an offer from SLU, but he is a nice point guard with a nice perimeter shot. Also deserving of mid-major offers. Maybe that would change if he grew (short and no muscle), but he is just so small and not talented enough making plays to make up for his lack of size in my opinion.

SLUH/Hazelwood Central

Hazelwood Central has a physically impressive squad with a lot of length and strength, but SLUH played them tough beyond the 1st quarter when Steve Holloway was lights out. Junior Xavier Sneed is their top player and he had a nice game. He is really long and a big time athlete, but needs to work on his game and improve his skill level. Definitely a major target with his length and athleticism, but could be a boom or bust type depending on his development as a player. Could probably be a lock down defender early in his career and will also be able to rebound for his position early. I am really interested to see his development. Sneed and Dominique Dobbs, both juniors, were too much for SLUH with their length and athleticism and sophomore guard Steve Holloway couldn't miss in the 1st quarter. SLUH was led by senior power forward Hunter Schmidt who is just a tough kid and guards Brandon McKissic, sophomore, and Matt Nester, junior. I really like Brandon McKissic's game and he is SLUH's best player in my opinion (Nester is a shooter trying to show that he can play the point, but is too limited to play pg). McKissic really gets after it and is just a really tough kid and only a sophomore. BJ Wilson is a solid sophomore big man who may be worth tracking as well, but he still has a lot of work to do.
