Recruiting - 2016

The snowball effect is real ..... LeBron, Bosh and Wade. Okafor and Jones at Duke. And the scenarios I mentioned with Hughes were all legit, so I was told.

But I do not disagree with your assessment of the open scholarships. And it is a hope -- mine were indeed dashed as none of the Hughes "add ons' came true except Love. But don't think for one minute guys won't "seek opportunity elsewhere" should the need arise and the spots need to be opened. I'm not advocating it, just sayin'. Transfers are a part of the every year life of a college program.

I know VCU is over-committed with schollies versus what's open. Same too at Umass with their latest verbal commit for next year. If, say, John Manning is = to Brett Jolley is = to Austin Gillmann is = to Eliott Welmer ...... something would have to give, no? And that's not based in anythign factual, just heights listed on a game day program. You coudl do the same with McBroom = Crawford = Roby = Bartley=Reynolds= etc.

Since I've been the pessimist about landing JT, it was good to hear him say it would be good for him and the city to stay at home, and to show other locals going to SLU's a good option. Makes me change my thinking a little in that we're not going to be summarily dismissed as we were by previous local 5 stars. As I've said, the crow would taste delicious.

With regard to the discussion about a snowball effect when Jayson Tatum chooses SLU, let me suggest that Coach Crews and SLU are already building a strong team for JT to join. When Tatum is a freshman — and if no current roster player or commitment leaves — there will be only one other player to come in with him, but Agbeko, Lancona, and Crawford will be seniors; Miles Reynolds, Brett Jolly, Malik Yarbrough, Marcus Bartley, Davell Roby, and Austin Gillmann will be juniors (or some of them may be redshirt sophomores); and Eliot Welmer and that notorious stud (player-to-be-named-later) will be sophomores. Even without Tatum, that squad could be better than the 2012-13 and 2013-14 squads and be a serious Final Four contender; Tatum and whoever comes in with him would likely make SLU a serious National Championship favorite. So the momentum could continue even after a one-and-done year, because the '14 class would return for their senior season.

I feel that Tatum will be a Billiken, but SLU is in great shape even otherwise.

My thoughts exactly, I was just afraid to say it. +100,000

In my opinion, here's the only problem with that as it regards to Tatum.

He will be cutting down his list soon (I expect SLU to be on it). But if he's going to be making a decision sooner rather than later, that could mean next spring early summer. And I think the bills will struggle this year. So at the time of his commitment, momentum may not be as strong as it would be when he actually came to SLU.

And I know that Jayson is probably smart enough to realize that SLU will be rebuilding next year. But even so, NCAA tourney success and ranking-based notoriety that we had this year definitely helps in recruiting. And we may not have as much of that after next season.

But I like the optimism and agree we could be pretty damn good in a few years.

Based on interviews, Jayson understands the draw to SLU and the unique opportunity he would have here.

If winning a National Championship is a priority for him, he will not be coming to SLU.

Why? Put a Tatum type talent on one of our teams the last few years and we would have been legitimate title contenders.

Agree completely.

That's just wrong. Not only will the 2016-17 SLU squad be strong and deep enough to win the National Championship with Tatum, but the Bills will also be a pre-season Top 5 team to do so.

I appreciate being optimistic about this bunch of recruits, but most of the guys we're talking about in this hypothetical Final Four contender have played limited or no minutes in college. And the guys who haven't played are good but not great recruits. There's reason to be optimistic, sure, but we're talking about a ton that has to happen in the next year or two for us to be in the Final Four discussion. And while the coaching staff has done pretty well with developing talent the last several years, we'd need more still (in addition to landing Tatum) if we're talking realistic final four/championship hopes.

SLU target 2016 PG Nai Carlisle has committed to San Jose State. He is now officially a tool.

Also, I'm sorry to say it, but former Billiken DBO (and current San Jose State assistant) Mike LePore is also a tool.

Edit: Corrected San Diego State to San Jose State.

Which means making march madness for the 4th straight season that much more important, so far our early season's tournament field although weak is perfect for added wins. That being said it may take more than just reaching the dance for JT.

Perhaps you don't understand hypotheticals or what "... -type" means.

I knew what you were saying, but what impact adding a top 5 recruit would have had on two of the best teams in the program's history is largely irrelevant to the discussion. We had great teams the past two seasons, but essentially all of the key contributors from those teams are gone and this currently unproven collection of talent is the team that Jayson Tatum would be joining.

At Duke, Kentucky, or Kansas he would be joining other top talent and instantly be playing for a top ranked team with legitimate National Championship odds. To the extent playing for an elite program with other elite talent and the legitimate chance of winning a National Championship matters to Jayson, he will be heading to one of the blue bloods.
