Recruit (1/7)

  1. startin to come together boys, startin to come together!
  2. Definitely needed Mitchell and Ellis to win this one tonight. Hard to watch without thinking 'what if'...seems to be the life of a Billiken fan. Kyle Cassity tries but he's not a D1 player. He pads stats vs weak teams and doesn't make a difference on the floor against decent competition. He's tentative, can't create his own shot, and has a slow release. SLU has to get production from the #3 position and while Ellis was targeted for the #3 or #4, they need to try something different to fill the void. When Kwamain is back, I'd like to see Remekun or Smith play the #3. KM and Salecich (or Jordan) handle the backcourt with Conklin, Remekun/Smith, and Willie. I think you have to try to play bigger because our guards, outside of KM, will generally be overmatched. Remekun/Smith may not have the Majerus "system" down yet, but they give energy and make plays on both ends and could create matchup problems. If Cuonzo Martin can turnaround MSU in his 2nd year, it's disappointing the SLU turnaround will take 4-5 years. Looks like another season of mediocrity and perhaps even a losing record, especially against a strong and more-balanced A-10. SLU has an enrollment of 13,000 (undergrad and grad). Many of them live in St. Louis. It's a disgrace we can't get a few hundred students to care about basketball to go to game, regardless if school is on break. All you need is less than 5% of the enrolled students to go to a game to make it look like we have a student section that cares.
  3. Solid win today. Kennesaw is a good team - athletic, quick, and good shooters, they will do well in their conference and it will be intersesting how they do against ND. They were better than Nebraska. WR's first half defense (5 blocks on the game) forced KSU to be perimeter oriented. They knocked down some shots, but for the most part were afraid to come inside. KC's four 3's were nice to see, but credit KM and CS for penetrating and giving him open looks - 6 assists each. KC has a very slow release on his shot, which didn't matter today because all his looks were wide open, but will in the A-10. Some posts are griping about the 16 turnovers. I disagree. That's not a lot considering they were pressed for 40 minutes against an athletic team who clearly wanted to speed up the pace. When KM was out, we had a backcourt of KC, JJ, and CS facing their first major college press and traps. For the most part they were smart with the ball and the press didn't beat us. The huge difference from last year is the offensive ball movement and sense of team chemistry. Last year everyone looked to Lisch and Tommie to make a play. This year no one on the court is afraid to shoot and they understand their role. Majerus knows these guys get it and each player off the bench contributes. RM's halftime adjustments the last 2 games have won each game - we came out dominant the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half to take control. Playing away from Chaifetz will be a challenge, but I'll be happy with 1 win vs Iowa St, ND/Northwestern, or a weak Georgia team.
