Recruiting - 2018 class

Regarding Gordon, it sounds like he wasn't happy at Vianney. Whatever the reasons, whatever he said, he just sounds like he was over it. He moved on, and he's going to a good program with a good coach.

I don't think we should be writing off a talent of that magnitude because he showed occasional discontent as a sophomore in high school. While I understand there might be reasons we might not recruit a big-time player - grades, attitude, legal problems, whatever - I don't think there's enough to lay off Gordon at this point. He's getting a much needed reset. I'd refresh his offer and stay involved.

I can tell you that he has some issues that would make coaching difficult and playing with difficult, too. There is a reason he bounces around...

2018 SG Aundre Hyatt (6-6, 210, 4★) has received an offer from Saint Louis. Another 4 star!!!

Aundre Hyatt: PF, 6-6, 180, Bronx, NY (Archbishop Stepinac)Offers: SLU, UMass, LaSalle, St. John’s, South Florida, Yale, Hofstra, Manhattan, Iona. Interest: VCU, Davidson, Xavier, Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland, Stanford, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Temple, Princeton, Cornell, Fairfield, James Madison. Latest News: After a breakout performance in the Nike EYBL (including a huge game against MOKAN Elite), Hyatt’s recruitment exploded. Scouting Report: Hyatt is a very athletic forward who can shoot the 3, handle the ball, and block shots. He’s a strong on-ball defender, as well. Young for his class, Hyatt is also an excellent student, with a 97% average. Twitter: @aundrehyatt_15

This kid is blowing up at the moment. He's only 15 and has a high ceiling. Read this: http://www.lohud.com/story/sports/high-school/lohud-varsity-insider/2016/04/18/stepinacs-aundre-hyatt-put-country-notice/83189412/

Geez, this could get ugly fs all these 4 star recruits go to the BCS schools like they normally do...

I'm not worried about it as Ford can't be dumb enough to put all his eggs in 4 star baskets (particularly 4 stars that we have no natural connection to). Instead he's taking a flier on a few but will be making a strong push for the kids we have a legitimate shot at.

If nothing else, having a bunch of offers out to 4 star guys has the potential to create a sense of urgency for 3 star guys when scholarships start to fill up. The biggest flaw in the "only offer the same number of available schollys" mindset that Sodie and sometimes Crews used is that kids never feel a sense of urgency to make their decision.

I wouldn't get too worked up about this... probably a player one of our new assistants (likely Bailey since LaSalle is also one of the kid's offers) has a connection with. How much value does a 4-star rating for a 15-year-old really have anyway? A lot can change. The kid could blow up and be a 5-star or not develop much and settle in as a 3-star. It seems you might as well aim high when you are throwing out VERY early offers. Cast a wide net, aim high when you think you have a good shot, but most importantly have a deep list of good Plan B options and make sure you are making good evaluations.

+1 The folks at Vianney are going to take the high road and will never discuss the true issues that occurred. Should we write the kid off because of his experience there? No. He might turn his attitude around. But all factors have to be taken into account. If we end up bringing him in, and he exhibits the same attitude he had at Vianney, this board will fault Ford for ignoring the warning signs.

A four star smart kid should be at the top of our recruiting list. Of course, that is assuming the staff agrees with his four star assessment.

We'll be fine once we can show them we can put a legit team around them. Jolly will be gone by the time this guy comes to SLU.

I recognize the names of some of those interested schools....we have no chance.

I'm giving Ford the benefit of the doubt on the recruits he's going after. Rick looked at players who he thought would work in his system and were tough enough to take his teachings to heart. Travis seems more of a salesman type. Plus the ACs he's added seem solid. So, maybe we don't land the 4s but we'll gladly settle for 3s who are legit 3s.

At it again:

2016 - 2018 SG Omar Silverio (6-3, 173, 2★) has received an offer from Saint Louis. -

2018 SG Dallas Watson (6-2, 170, 2★) has received an offer from Saint Louis. -

Fruitful recruiting trip, I'd say, with these and the Cockburn offer.

Omar Silverio: SG, 6-3, 173, Bronx, NY (St. Raymond)Offers: SLU, VCU, USF, Iona, Hofstra. Interest: Virginia, Rutgers, Temple. Latest News: SLU offered Silverio and teammate Dallas Watson. Scouting Report: Silverio is a combo guard with good handles and big-time scoring ability. He’s good off the dribble and can shoot from all over. Twitter: @OmarSilverio15

Dallas Watson: SG, 6-2, 170, Bronx, NY (St. Raymond)Offers: SLU, Binghamton. Interest: Kansas, Pitt, Virginia, Western Kentucky, Brown, Monmouth. Latest News: SLU offered Watson and teammate Omar Silverio. Scouting Report: Watson is a high-motor player, sound defender, and good three-point shooter. He has a high basketball IQ and is always given the opponent’s best player to guard. Twitter: @Dallas_w20

Silverio and Watson form a three-guard backcourt with 2017 PG Isaiah Washington, who has a lot of high-level interest himself and some good offers. They also play alongside 6-6 2017 SF Sidney Wilson, who has a lot of D-I offers.

Silverio seems to be the bigger scorer of the two, while Watson is the more all-around player who generally gets the tough defensive assignment. Both appear capable of handling the point, but haven't been called upon to do so much on their HS team with Washington there.

Odd that we are offering two star guys so early. I can only assume that Ford thinks the recruitment of these guys is going to blow up, and he wants to be able to tell them that he recognized their talent early on.

So what is a 3 star recruit ... great handles and can shoot from all over with one eye closed? 4 stars is both eyes closed?

Don't get hung up on star ratings. These guys are just finishing sophomore season. Very few players have had enough evaluations to have star ratings from every service at this point.

Both of these players have interest from BCS conference programs; that's a far better inidication of talent than star ratings for players who aren't yet juniors.

And even later on, star ratings are just a small piece of the overall puzzle.

I hate star ratings, to be honest. Unless a guy is a 5-star recruit, one of the no-doubter top-couple-dozen players in a given class, they're pretty meaningless.

Bishop also played in the NYC Catholic HS Association. With Macon on board now, I expect we'll be working those schools a lot.

Goodwin was rated a 2 star recruit at the same point in his high school career. He is now a top 100 recruit and 4 stars.

This.

Also, 2 stars is the default rating for players not yet evaluated - which, again, is common for sophomores.

Do yourselves a favor and ignore star ratings. Take a more comprehensive approach instead of looking at a digit next to a kid's name.
