  1. >I was there last night. I believe that you are writing a lot >into that apology. Brad was not explicit as to what he was >apologizing for. He simply said that he handled the >situation poorly. I do not recall any reference to Bobby >Knight of a lack of self confidence. I too applaude Coach >for accepting responsibility for whatever it is that he >feels he handled poorly. However, it wasn't clear to me what >he meant by that. >Coach did say that he felt that the "core" of the nine >returning players would "be Good" and would be compete hard. >All in all, a very pleasant evening and an optimistic >atmosphere. It was because the apology was specificly slated to the 3 seniors. You nor the vast majority of posters didn't have a clue what really went on this year behind the locker room doors! As for the Bobby Knight comment...paint a picture!
  2. >I was there and it went well. Nothing really was said. Good >luck to Jim Braun and John garrison as they are moving on. Nothing said?????...what about Soderbergs apology to the seniors for the way he acted throughout the season in a unprofessional mannor to the likes of Bobby Knight. Now that said, I am more impressed that Soderberg had the balls to accept that fact & responsibility that the seniors could not control the multitude of issues beyond their control. "Seniors should step up" as so many posters stated throughout the season. Goes to show how little everyone really knew what went on behind locker room doors. None the less, this basketball season will be the season that the seniors will try to forget, not for the win/loss aspect, not because of their fellow teammates or unwritten athletic dept policies but by the the way they were treated by a head coach that showed so little self confidence in his own ability to motivate people. Hopefully the seniors have learned a business lesson on human behavior..."you can get more out of people if you build them up versus constantly berating and tearing them down"! SLU only lost 3 players from last year so in effect there should not have been much difference in play. None the less the seniors could not control eye infections, family issues, multiple concussions and other physical injuries. I myself wish the very best to Tom, Reggie & Isazk on their efforts and contibutions as well as to their future career endeavors. Most of all to next years SLU basketball team! Brad, last nights apology said a lot about you as a man and coach. You may never know what it really meant to ALL the seniors to hear it. Thanks and good luch next year! New2SLU
  3. >according to Angres Thorpe at the coaches corner.......he >looked like he was about to puke at times too!! Tom was at the emergency room Tuesday night getting 3 litters of IV fluid to help with severe dehydration due to the flu. He is in the student infirmery getting 3 more as we speak! His head was in a basket everytime he came off the court. Tom said he was very proud of JJ's performance and looked for his continued contribution.
  4. >Spoken like a true father How's it going Big T? -Q Great...why aren't you out digging rocks! See ya at X-mas!
  5. >the billikens also got outrebounded. imo, the weakness of >vouyoukas, frericks and ohannon is the difference. fine, >the guards stink it up and shoot horribly. get a few more >offense rebounds for put backs and we win going away. but >look at the stats, drejaj and bryant were our top >rebounders. If everyone is running up & down the court jacking up 3's the probability that the ball if it does not go in will arc away from the center below the basket. Thus why Drejaj & Bryant were the top rebounders. If Tom or Ian only touches the ball 4 times in a game what do you expect. Why did Izik start the game at center? To run the court. If this is what Brad wants to do this early in the season then he might as well leave Tom & Ian back in St Louis. This may be the year of transition but Lisch & Lindell are not here yet so we had better mix some new with the old. Tom & Ian are the centers. The guards have got to use them or this game will be repeated many times before this year is over! Tom didn't come to SLU to end his career like this!!
  6. I was more than amused that at the end of the Billikens commercial when the different pictures of coach & players appeared on the tickets that Tom's picture appeared on the Dayton ticket. I wonder if this was a tweak at Dayton especially since Tom's grandfather's cousin was Tom Frericks; University Dayton head coach & AD fame. The Dayton Daily Newspaper had quite the article about it last year.
  7. Tom got a concussion once during an all-star b-ball game between his junior/senior year in high school. An elbo upside the head! Never had one in football.
  8. >" TF's recovery, and RB's foot? These nagging little >injuries are starting to worry me. Bills have been >relatively lucky, with exception of TF, in regards to >injuries the past two seasons". Tom had to go through an "special project conditioning phase" to get back into b-ball shape. This was partly due to Tom taking 15 hours of class time this summer especially taking Spanish 2 & 3. It didn't leave a lot of extra time. Tom also received a concussion about 4 weeks ago during a pickup game at the gym. The doctors would not let Tom play or condition for about a week or so. Due to that I think Coach Brad was a liitle perturbed that Tom keeps getting banged up. Therefore to keep Tom healthy to at least 10/15 Brad had Tom asigned to one of the asst coaches as a special project to get him in the best shape ever before practice starts 10/15. They ran his butt off and then ran him some more. Tom didn't know until after the "special project status" that he was being pushed to run and make times faster than the other bigs. Not that that was a problem especially since he was making most the times, I would say at this junction, Tom is in pretty good shape to start the practice season. Additional conditioning will continue especially as the team continues to take healthy jaunts through Forest Park and the hilly terrain. Tom says that there are some killer steep, gut retching hills in Forest Park! Tom is back working with the team working on individual skills as well as team conditioning. No more issues with the concussion and as far as his asthma, I would say as long as he has his inhalher he should not experience the issues that were caused by breathing all the circus air junk & dust experienced last year. Tom knows he has to run and stay in the games and finish each game vs last year.
  9. >mr frericks, no idea you were a notre dame athlete. did you >know rusty lisch from your college days? Rusty was a year behind me!
  10. >Bonwich the elder is a Domer '48 and taught there from about >'55-'57 and '59-'65 -- and my mom is a SMC chick -- which >means, for better or for worse, that I was born there. (I'm >probably one of five or fewer people alive today who can >claim to have played catch with Irish f.b. coach Hugh >Devore. You thought the Davey years were dismal?) Two uncles >and several cousins are also grads. > >I had some schizophrenia issues with the SLU-ND b.b. games >of the '70s -- and I thought the NIT scheduling last year >was utterly fraudulent -- but other than that, I have no >problems screaming at the TV screen every Saturday in fall >but still getting equally exercised at Savvis throughout the >winter. > >You actually played on the '73 team? Waycool. What brings >you to the Billikens? My son the center for slu!
  11. Now, now kids...can't we just get along? You haven't lived until you've been a part of a program like ND & ND Football. None the less the last 10 years have not been pretty.(Bob Davey sucked) Having been at the ND/Mich game last week it was wonderful to again hear the "awakening" of the echos. My computer would not allow me to play the link but then I didn't need the link for me to remember that season! I played on the 1973 championship team. Other than the usual bad feelings when it concerns U of Miami I hold no such grudge with any other school, even Southern Cal or Boston College! I understand why most competitor schools hate ND...its part of the territory. My question is why does SLU alumni spew so much venom when it concerns ND? Has anyone ever been to and experienced the campus and atmosphere at ND? Its very special. SLU & ND does not compete in football. Other than last year, when has SLU played ND...in anything? I sure I've missed alot but please lets get a life! I notice that SLU has the same feelings about other Cathloic shools such as Marquett. Does SLU have the same ill feeling towards Gonzaga? How about Dayton or Boston College? God only knows that ND basketball has reserrected itself since Matt Doherty came to ND. I found myself in a strange situation with my son playing against ND last year. Make no mistake I hoped & prayed that he would have a good showing in that game and that SLU would beat ND in that game! As I tell my all all of my kids who play college sports, and wife... be true to your school!
  12. If...alumni/fans are planning to go to the Paradise Jam in Nov, How does one set up the trip? Is trip planning up to the individual i.e.(transportation & hotel) or does SLU put together a package deal for friends & alumni? Anyone know? How was this handled in the past?
  13. >about it being easier to get Jucos in SLU than at Wisconsin. >It certainly is an eye brow raiser considering the contrary >discussions seen here. The problem at SLU is, if you are a transfer you never know what your major is going to end up to be. In the case with TF...initially a business major coming in from 2 years at UAB and then a year at Chipola,JUCO, Tom had to settle for a psychology degree to be accepted by SLU based on the hours accepted by SLU. Grades were not an issue concerning the courses at either school.
  14. You asked for it... Tom's shoulder is coming along well. Tom is real bummed that the strength coach left. He had a lot of confidence in the coach and his ability to work on his shoulder in the weight room. As for playing in games, he says that he has not really tried to push it hard yet since Coach Brad said not to until October 16th! Tom has has not spent a whole lot of time playing at West Pine due to his 12 hours of class this summer. Spanish III has been real tough and he spends most of his time working on his studies. None the less he has been at all the scheduled conditioning sessions this summer. On another subject... I don't understand all the issues concerning AA as stated on other posts but when Tom transfered to SLU from JUCO, he lost about 42 hours in transfering. I don't believe all the courses he lost were bad courses since the UAB academic adviser knew about his desires pertaining to a business degree. Tom was taking general & business courses at UAB for two years before spending a year at JUCO. I assume that when you go to a JUCO, thoses hours towards a a business background must not mean a thing, at least at SLU! Tom always wanted a business major but due to the transfer and SLU not taking so many hours, They slotted him into psychology. He will graduate with a psychology degree with a business back ground. This could be a fundamental problem why athletes just give up and move to other schools knowingly they will get in. To get his business degree would mean at least another 2 semesters after this year to get ther business major at SLU. Tom has already used his 5th year so it would be on his $$$! I'm encouraging him to go back to UAB and get a double major by transfereing all the SLU & JUCO hours. It would be much cheaper to transfer back to UAB if he still desires the business degree. He will be 24 when he graduates this coming spring and is starting to tire of non stop school. Time will tell!
