Not to beat a dead horse, but I truly wonder how much Platt held up CC in regards to recruiting. From the stories I've heard, Platt literally had to sign off on anything and everything as far as recruiting goes.

For what it is worth I heard from Watson and Ramey that when they visited SLU last year that Cheaney was by far the most charismatic assistant. Challenged the two of them in HORSE, things like that. Made the visit enjoyable for the pair.

I could see it being difficult to fully judge Cheaney's ability to recruit because of the head coach. I would guess that a player may have a solid connection to an assistant but if he doesn't really feel it with the head coach, that could be a big knock on the school.

Jim Platt should never be allowed to earn income from the sport of basketball ever again. He leaves a trail of destruction wherever he has been at.

The only plausible explanation for why Platt had that much responsibility is that he was the only assistant with considerable experience implementing a recruiting strategy. If that actually was the reason, that's a failure by Crews in putting together his staff. Also, since in spite of Platt's recruiting experience, we still scheduled the top recruit in the country to visit campus during a dead period, I'm willing to think that Platt's experience brought no value whatsoever to this team.

As someone here so eloquently put it during the season, Jim Platt walking into a recruit's home and talking to the recruit's mom has to be the single worst moment in said recruit's recruitment.

I now just picture Platt as Gary Busey

-I thought the DBO was in charge of scheduling recruiting visits? is this board legend that Platt was in charge of recruiting or based on fact?

Platt was indeed top dog for recruiting on Crews' staff. Makes no sense, but it's true.

Recruiting visits to campus? Yes. Visits to recruits? Probably not. He might help an assistant map out a recruiting trip or something, but he'd more likely be doing more work for the on-campus recruiting visits - hotels, scheduling, flights, etc.

Responsibilities probably vary for the DBO from staff to staff, but he's almost like an administrative assistant- books team travel, works out details, keeps up with academic and other compliance, orders equipment, plans incoming recruiting visits, gets scouting video together (was VHS tape exchange in my day). That kind of stuff. He has a hand in a lot of things, but using the words "in charge of" as it relates to a DBO is probably not quite accurate. It's basically the step between manager and assistant coach.

I have no problem with the person who is in charge signing off on what others are doing - after all it is his butt on the line and you don't want a bunch of cowboying going on. That said, if you are not effective then your signing off is not going to work either.

Drew could be lightning in a bottle, but he might also sruggle or even fail on a bigger stage. Ford has proven he can recruit top players and slu is positioned well for him to leverage those skills.

Not to play devil's advocate here, but Drew is a pretty cool customer. I mean, he's known for that shot in the '98 NCAA tournament, had a few years of pro ball under his belt and took a very underachieving Valpo team to 4 consecutive Horizon titles (thanks to Butler leaving). He's succeeded in (figurative and literal) arenas most men would crumble in.

With that being said, I'm 100% sold on Travis Ford scheduling Vandy for a home-and-home and opening up a can on the entire Drew cheering section.

Googled Platt to see where else he has coached. Upon checking his Wikipedia page, I made sure to change it from "current" SLU coach to "former" SLU coach.

Crews did a lot of questionable things during his tenure at SLU, but probably the most damning was surrounding himself with familiar faces rather than folks who could help build the program. His hires included his former assistant at Army who had no track record of success (Platt), a former Evansville player who did not seem bring anything to the table in terms of coaching or technical skills (Marcus Wilson), a former recruit / fellow IU alum with very little coaching experience (Cheaney). The other guys (Bronson & Danny Brown) were holdovers from Majerus I believe. As the more experienced / skilled assistants that Majerus chose were picked off by other schools Crews simply failed to replace them with good hires.

We don't know what type of resources Crews was given in terms of his assistant coaching staff budget. So while I don't disagree with anything you said, I will add that I didn't think of any of those ACs as necessarily bad hires when they happened.

Are you a former college coach?

CC is the Clarence Thomas of coaching it seems to me. I never heard him interviewed, never heard him speak on camera all 2 years. thought he's be coach in waiting for when hired, after JC hung it up voluntarily, but seeing as he seemed to offer no stepping up in lieu of JC not getting it done I'm glad he's out with the rest of them.

Cheaney did some of the postgame interviews.

Coach Ford went to the Final Four to assemble a staff. Why have we not heard anything yet about any hires? Is it possible they decided to wait until after the championship game to make announcements, and we'll hear something today?
