If you are considering CC as a replacement for Crews it wouldn't be a bad thing for him to go to a IUPUI level school get some Head Coaching chops and then we get him back.

Being successful means that assistants get poached part of the game. I want to keep him mostly due to the IU Mafia support we get from the Media. Also he single-handedly recruits all our players.

Talking about coaches, I always wondered if Porter or Harriman did not leave and Crews never came, who would have been our HC?

I'd think it would have been Moser. If Majerus hadn't gotten Crews to come to SLU, it definitely would have been Moser.

Another board member and I had this discussion a few weeks ago. Just think, if Moser had stuck around another year, he might have been able to tell that Majerus wasn't likely to stay longer. If he was there when Rick took the leave of absence, he becomes the interim, and maybe he ends up being the head coach here. Instead, he's struggling up at Loyola.

Your last point cannot be stressed enough. Cheaney brings a credibility very rarely seen at a program like ours; all time scoring leader in the history of the Big 10 and a successful NBA career that last for 12 seasons. Do those tow things automatically make one a good coach? Of course they do not but they can certainly get your foot in the door when it comes to recruiting which is more than half the battle.

I think it would be a huge loss for the program if he were to go elsewhere

He would have struggled here too. Great guy, horrible in game coach

I wonder why Rick had so much faith in him if this is true. (Not necessarily arguing your point)

How much faith did he really have in him? He was our top recruiter and he let porter talk to the media but that doesn't mean he really had faith that he'd be a great head coach.

I realize that he and Crews have the Indiana connection but I always assumed the only reason Cheaney came here was that he was given some sort of assurance that he would at least be considered for the job here when Coach Crews decides to hang it up. If he was considering the jump to IUPUI maybe that isn't the case

Why would you think that?? You do know that CC moved to st louis without his family right??

Rick always said he thought Porter should have been named as his successor-to-be.

This might have been one of the few times that RM would have been wrong in his assessment.

Could have been, but we really don't know. Filling in for a couple games is different than taking over the program. Porter would have took over a veteran program and would have been able to tweek the systems closer to something he was more comfortable running like Crews did.

I wasn't a big backer of Porter as coach in waiting, but I wouldn't want to judge any coach based on good or bad results in a fill in role.

If he continues to lead sub .500 teams at Loyola, it may be fair to start seriously questioning his ability as an Xs and Os coach. However, he has accumulated a good amount of talent and they keep losing close games. These next two seasons will prove a lot about Porter Moser as a coach.

I sure don't recall him ever formally saying that but whatever. Even if he did, it could have been just so that he could keep his top recruiter happy. Not because he truly believed he was a good game coach.

porter was fired from Illinois State for the same reason..good recruiter and good guy but a bad coach...look back at the success they had at Illinois State after he was fired with HIS recruits..never was Porter the answer for SLU and that is why he left

Sign of a bad coach IMO

Note Crews had 1 winning record in his previous 10 seasons before coming to SLU. He did take an Army team from single digit wins in his first four years to 10+ wins after and had much more success from 1985 - 1995. These stats, however, have always scared me about the Crews selection. I hope he proves my fears unwarranted.

One of the things that has been mentioned by many of us is that it's damn near impossible to recruit at Army. This year will be the first one we get to see Jim Crews recruits at Saint Louis.

I agree, and I am impressed by the Crews recruits so far, and the end of the NC State game impressed me a bunch. Majerus (and Crews) have forgotten more about basketball than I will ever know - so if he had faith in Crews, good deal. The relatively mediocre track record at Evansville and Army along with what seems to be lack of in game adjustments has always made me nervous. I got very spoiled by Majerus.

I agree with your last 2 sentences.

One of the things I noticed (and it's been brought up before) is how much Coach Crews talks about the players being better people. I honestly thought that kind of coaching had gone away. He seems to be a personable guy and not the hot-head he was earlier in his career.

He's our guy now, and I think we'll be happy with what he does (with the exception of timeouts).

my take on this and also why I share slusignguys concern is I have tallied with people who had kids play for Crews and he was a true hot head. I believe the termination from Army made him adjust to the other extreme and I truly believe we got worse as the year went due to his new found let them work it out philosophy and this same approach will not work with a young inexperienced team
