McBroom gone

FWIW, what I've heard confirms this: no more transfers, and all the freshmen are still on board. I can also tell you that a number of players have told me in the past few weeks that they are very supportive of the coaching staff and think highly of Coach Crews.

I also remain bullish on young Brett Jolly. His footwork is much better than some on here seem to think and big men tend to take a bit longer with offense. I'm not saying he can become like Conklin but I wish some of you know it all types would lay off Brett and be kinder to this kid, who works his butt off, has a good motor, and has a ton of upside.

I can confirm this as well. We all need to be patient and see how this team develops over the next year. Obviously, recruiting is important. Among some of the more active MBMs on this board the level of negativity over the past month is truly amazing. I was here in the Ekker days and I can promise everyone that for someone to suggest that we are back to those time is a ludicrous joke and an incredible insult to this team and the coaching staff.

-IF we have addition by subtraction with the players no longer on the team and that they were on the team is the reason we were no better in March than we were in November that is a better condition than I expected, but I'm skeptical this is the real deal

-time will tell

Listened to a lot of good reports last year too. I learned my lesson. All I know is that as of today the players are pissed off. I've heard different than DocB on some things, but let's see what happens in November. To quote Taj, "Can't wait."

Even if he works that hard, I just don't understand where the upside is in this kid. He's not a particularly good shooter, rebounder, defender, passer, ball handler, or shot blocker. He doesn't have much strength or length for his position. He's not a total stiff but demonstrated very limited athletic ability. In fact, I see less upside in him than any other freshman.

If you have any video or statistics or any other evidence to show me what you're talking about, I'd love to see it. I watched a lot of games this season and I just have no idea what you mean by "ton of upside" when it comes to him.

Agreed. I'm sure BJ is a nice kid, but I think it is fair to question whether or not he has upside. I don't see much. It's nothing personal. Could he have a career like Remekun? I think that is his ceiling. Any comparisons to Conklin is absolutely lazy. BC as a freshman was way ahead of RS freshman BJ. I would love to wrong about him and hope I have to eat crow in a couple of years.

Regarding Reynolds, I am glad he is staying. The kid is fearless driving to the hoop and by all accounts is a high character kid. He is one of the fastest SLU players I have ever seen going north and south, but I don't really have a handle on what his role will be in the future. Could he become more of a traditional PG? Can he become a defensive stopper? Is he a scoring guard?... doesn't seem like he is going to be a sharpshooter. Watching him I thought he would be effective if we would put on a press, but JC doesn't seem to do that unless we're down by a bunch to NC State. Curious what others think about how MR will develop and what role he could fill.

MR is one of those guys who I'm willing to give all 4 years to breakout and realize his potential. He has the Kwamain about him where he can take over and win a game himself.

Jolly - I don't see much in him. If you're pointing to his fadeaways as reason to be optimistic, then you should see me out there. I can shoot pretty well. I also suck. But he probably takes too much ######. Let's see what this year brings. You never know how guys can improve. He had a year of prep so if he's going to improve, it should be now. If he is still behind Gillmann and then Neufeld after 2 years and a year of prep, then he'll probably be gone.

So many on here talk as if none of the players will improve and will go into next season no better than they were this past season. Players can learn to shoot and that includes Jolly. There are above average players who early in their careers were no better than the freshmen at SLU. If they are really pissed, look for marked improvement next season.

Seems like lately the assumption that no one will improve is a decent one...Manning, Lancona, Glaze, McBroom...

Who has improved under Crews? Jett?

People are starting to spin fictitious tales about glass half-full improvement. Glad Pistol and I are here to inject some reality.

....We lost to a 7 win George Mason team at home by 25+, in early March. That is who we are right now.

I would put about a 20% chance that we are .500 in conference next year. Probably go 10-2 in the non-conf though with a 324th ranked SOS.

Rob Loe, Jordair Jett, Dwayne Evans, Mike Crawford, Reggie Agbecko to name a few.

I know that everyone really appreciates the education you and Pistol are providing the posters and readers of this board. Maybe you two can move on to sharing out of bounds plays.

Jolly looks like he can shoot from mid-range. The problem is it takes him too long to get his shot off.

He also didn't show any post moves. He looks coordinated enough to develope some. Hopefully he works on those this summer.

If all 6 freshmen stay that will be quite a fete for the coaching staff to keep all happy enough to stay. If all stay 4 years and get us to a couple tournaments I'd be happy. I would also expect the 7 left after they graduate would be better than the 7 we had left after last years graduates.

I believe the players will improve over the Summer on their own. When they report for practice the coaches will see better players than they saw this past season. I believe these players have an inner pride and have a burning desire to make sure this next season is far better than the last one.

He shot .744 from the FT line, so he's got some touch for a big. But .260 from the field and .105 from 3 - that's dreadful, regardless of position. Maybe it is his release because something is definitely wrong there. He's not finding his spots.

He seems to move relatively well for his size, runs the floor well. I'm not sure what else he's shown, though, that leads me to believe there's any "upside" whatsoever.

Trust me, I'd love for him to prove me wrong and have some kind of legendary Conklin Summer but Jolly was nowhere near where Conklin was at this stage of the game (please take this opportunity to go look up their freshman year stats....see?!). Conk always had a big frame, good rebounding sense, and crazy motor. He got all the ugly buckets. Jolly has shown a knack for falling down a lot.

Jordair. Freaking. Jett. I should've named my son after him.

HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE.

jordair's the dude. i'm actually not down on jolly at all today, because of that. if jordair hotdamn jett thinks the cancer has been excised, then i'm ok with going out there with what we've got now. if anything, i'm only concerned about milik working hard to make himself and the team better. i think he'll do it. billlllllllies.

If Crews wanted all the freshmen to stay then fine - this is his call, he will either float with them/his decision or sink. As far as the 2 juniors - one can only hope they get their act together. AY - he should be better but it will take more than just him. I do think it is fair to say that the freshmen will be better prepared mentally for what to expect and will be able to accept more instruction on the way Crews wants the game played. This summer may be the most important aspect for improvement for next year. I am still not sure what to do with the 2 schollies - i really want some more balance in the classes so this does not happen again.
