I would love to see what Manning does in practice that the coaching staff still plays him so much.

Would also like to hear why Reynolds, Crawford, and Gillmann didn't see much time today.

Also wondering why guys like Yarbrough get pulled for 10 minutes after a bad mistake yet McBroom turns the ball over a ton and let's his guy drain multiple 3s and he sees usual time.

Bartley and Roby need the keys to the offense, maybe even Reynolds; they all at least collapse the defense and make good decisions about passing/shooting. Let McBroom spot up. Ash can continue to play off the ball and make good cuts, handle the ball on isolations and pick'n'rolls at the end of the clock.

That was a frustrating game to watch for the last ten or so minutes. Lots of half-hearted screens and cuts on offense, and wayyyy too much dribbling. We either made non-threatening passes around the top of the key expecting someone else to do something (everybody), or dribbled aimlessly into a forest of defenders (looking at McBroom, here). Not going to work against ANY D1 opponent. The lack of intensity transferred to the defensive end - 50% shooting! Too many open looks off of sloppy on-ball defense and late rotations.

All that said, we were always going to have some ugly games this year. Here's hoping that the staff can make the guys realize that they have to buy-in on each possession and be assertive with the ball. I'm thinking that a couple of guys may have played their way out of some minutes today (Manning, McBroom), while our freshmen guards continued to look good for most of the game, until they started deferring at the end. Agbeko and Yarbrough also looked good, and Lancona found space well on offense. Gillmann and Jolly have a ways to go defensively, but they both look so much more comfortable on the offensive end than our board's favorite whipping boy.

Let's end with the positives... I liked seeing Roby hit the three, Bartley create off the bounce, and Yarbrough finish inside. Ash was solid again, as expected. Reynolds was aggressive while he was in there and drew some fouls, but didn't see much time. Agbeko showed us his rebounding skills and flashed a couple of post moves. Lancona got into position for easy buckets and finished them.

What I think is perhaps a bit different than what I have been reading. We played OK but missed a lot of FTs, this was not good. We literally lost the ball out of our hands a couple of times, not good. I think if we had sunk some of the throws we missed in the initial 10 or so minutes of the game we would have won. Agree not a good outcome but I was pleased to see TL playing and scoring, and even more pleased with DR and MY. Finally, I think that whether we like it or not we just cannot bench JM permanently, our other bigs cannot carry the rest of the season on their shoulders, at least not at this time.

Manning shouldn't be benched permanently, but in the 8-10 minutes he should be getting a game, he needs to hack the doodie out of anyone who comes in the lane. There is no excuse for him not to foul out every game. Send a message to the other teams and make them hesitant to go to the basket. And as Feed The Reed says, there seems to be no on-court leader....which I think Glaze can be. He has the drive and emotion to get the team going when they are struggling. I saw Glaze multiple times as players were subbing out of the game, move down and sit next to them on the bench and get in their ear. Ash will be the go to guy for SLU over the next two years and maybe he can turn into that leader. This freshmen class is going to be the real deal, lot of talent and potential, but they are still gonna make freshmen mistakes. Today was a close game and SLU couldn't make a basket down the stretch, not 1 point from 4:39 to 0:16. Just couldn't close it out like they did against SIUC.

Crews seems to favor upper classmen regardless of how they perform. The constant substitutions of players is alright when they are winning but may cause problems if the team starts losing .

I might get bashed for this, but the team is missing a key upperclassman, probably the best rebounder on the team, who will play significant minutes when he comes back.

Bad loss, but I had the ISU game penciled in as a loss, so it evens out. More bad losses will come.

Your post makes sense. One good win (ISU) and one abortion of a loss (CC).

This is going to be a roller coaster ride.

In Crews I trust, but where was Gillmann? He saw one 5 min stretch in the first half and they cut into the deficit while he was in the game, and then nothing?

Jolly is solid bench player, but at this point he should be 8th or 9th in the rotation. Way too much of him down the stretch.

I'm not going to pile on Manning. I'm confused why he got so much playing time and I'll leave it at that.

Ash and McBroom were the real problems though. Ash steps on the baseline on a drive when he's in a position to score or draw a foul when they were up 4. Just brutal. Then he goes to the line down 2 under 3 and misses both. McBroom had some nice pull up jumpers from inside the arc, but no 3s. Also had some BAD turnovers.

All of the little things add up. Defensive lapses. Bad turnovers. Poor FT shooting. Opponent makes a few difficult shots. Suddenly a game that should be a comfortable 10 point margin is even and we look dysfunctional on both ends at the worst possible time.

Without a low post threat, this team needs a steady diet of 3s in order to produce points - and 3 of 11 is not going to get it done. Lancona missed a wide open look - his only 3pt attempt. Nothing from Crawford. Bartley's only 3pt attempt was a heave at the buzzer. Roby and Ash were a combined 3-5 from 3. Maybe we should try and get them more open looks from beyond the arc.

Overall this is indeed a reality check. Ash is not an All A10 caliber player who can take over a game down the stretch. While all 6 of the freshmen have looked decent to good in stretches, at this point none of them are capable of creating their own shot. Ash and McBroom are really the only players on the roster who can just create a shot out of nothing, and neither of them have a very diverse repertoire (Ash can slash to while McBroom has his pull up mid range jumper off the dribble).

I said going into the season we should brace for at least one brutal home loss. That's 1. Let's hope they learn from this and play better down the stretch next game.
