Ekiyor was down to Florida, Miami, Vandy, and Xavier. 2 interesting points here: He's actually going to enroll this December and spend the second semester there, although I don't think he can play until fall 2016. Also, Ekiyor was the kid who was involved in a hit-and-run incident that injured a police detective back home in Ottawa this summer. I'm not sure where the case currently stands, but it apparently won't prevent him from coming to the US and enrolling this winter. It did keep him from returning to prep school in New Hampshire this fall, though.

-so he might fit right in with the X gangster squad of old? or perhaps present

-enrolling in January is used a lot in football, this is the first time I can think of a bball situation

Eh, everything I can find seems to indicate that this is his only offense, he's admitted he made a huge mistake and has been extremely cooperative, and the person he hit is okay. Sounds like a kid who made an honest mistake, then panicked and made a dumb decision. He's also lucky this happened back home in Canada and not in a more punitive state down here.

He would've done his fifth HS year at the prep school in NH he had already been attending, but had to stay home for his case. Because he won't be doing any time up there, he was able to reclassify as a 2015 student (his HS credits are complete; the fifth year would've been primarily for athletic development) and start school this upcoming semester.

Most of the 2016 updates have to do with our list thinning; many names still on the interest list haven't had much action in the past couple months in terms of recruiting media, and most of the rest have committed. I'm not aware of any current 2016 offers from SLU.

Juco guard Cortez Mitchell out of Mississippi has committed to Charleston Southern. SLU had reportedly offered a few months ago.

Charlie Moore has announced official visits to Cal, Memphis, VCU, Creighton, and Iowa State. Illinois, Pitt, and possibly Iowa are reportedly also in the mix, despite missing out on his official visit list. He plans to sign in November. It's safe to say SLU is out of this one, so I'm taking him off the list.

Deon Barrett (Lancaster, TX) committed to UTEP.

Kieran Hayward picked up an offer from UC-Riverside. After a deluge of offers when his team came over to the US in the summer, he's gone back home to Australia for graduation and final exams and his recruitment has slowed. Not sure if he'll be a fall or spring signee, nor what his final list is going to look like. But there's a lot of interest on him; St. Joe's is a potential frontrunner.

James Jones (Bogan Prep, Chicago) committed to Buffalo.

Sha'Markus Kennedy is going the Juco route for now, committing to Chipola CC in Florida. That's where we got Frericks and Newbourne from, for those who might recognize the school name.

Zion Morgan (Kenwood Academy, Chicago) committed to Valpo.

Dru Smith (Reitz, Evansville) committed to Evansville. It came down to a race between UE and Ball State.

-points to putting the efforts on kids from other years, or we don't know what's happening, could be both

-if we're done with this year I guess the staff thinks there will be no holes to fill, they have it/them filled or they want to fill from another year

Looks like we are done for 2016. I have to tell you this coaching staff is not knocking your socks off on the recruiting trail.

So much for the Calvin Cheney effect, eh? I really thought he'd have a huge impact on the recruiting trail, especially in Hoosier land. Not so much.

Hard to say whether we're done or not. The last two commitments - Bishop and Moore - both came out of nowhere. There are names we track for years that disappear and then commitments from guys we've mentioned on the board 0 to 3 times.

So I wouldn't close the book on 2016 yet. We could still use Hines' scholarship or see more transfers.

That said, 2017 and 2018 have the potential to be monster classes. The St. Louis area, Missouri, and Illinois are all stacked. Very, very deep. So if we decide to shut down 2016 with Moore and focus on bigger classes the following two years, I wouldn't be upset. The key is landing some of those first- and second-tier targets.

People overrated that factor, big time. It might matter to some of their parents, but the oldest HS kids now were born in 1997. Cheaney was starting his fifth NBA season by then. Hell, I was born in 1983 and only have the faintest memory of Cheaney at Indiana. I remember him more as a couple Washington Bullets trading cards I had.

Between those two posts, I think just about every reasonable spelling variant of Calbert's last name has been covered. As for mixing up his first name, 72, I think you're just old. :P

Frankly, the 2015 and 2016 classes in Indiana weren't very deep. That's why you're seeing the 6th rated player in Indiana going to a low mid-major. Where Cheaney is helping us is by building relationships with the 2017 and 2018 classes, which are quite deep. Whether we can land a Zach Gunn or an Eric Hunter, is another story. But we're off to a promising start.

SLU has two scholarships for 2016, correct?

One of those has been filled. We'll know more about his potential after his senior season.

There are still a few more weeks left for fall signings, correct?

Theres still a spring signing period, correct? Jett and Millick came during that time in previous years, correct?

As I see it, there are 13 scholarships given for this year. Ash Yacoubou graduates this year, this frees one scholarship which will go to Zeke Moore. To free another scholarship for next year we will have to eliminate someone else from the scholarship roster for this year by the end of this season. It is not clear what will happen to Hines' scholarship at the end of this year, but if he plays well and contributes to the team he will likely retain his scholarship. I do not see any evidence of active recruitment for the 2016 class at this time.

1. SLU has two scholarships for 2016, correct?

1a. One of those has been filled. We'll know more about his potential after his senior season.

1. Yes and no. Hines was awarded a scholarship this year, so if you are to project out from what we have right now, there are no more scholarships available. If you count on using Hines' scholarship for 2016 or assume there will be a transfer or transfers, then we would have scholarships available for 2016. It's highly unlikely we'll see a fall signee other than Moore.

1a. True.

2. We are currently in the 9/9/15-11/8/15 recruiting period. Then there is a four-day dead period before a long recruiting period (11/13 through the end of March). During the dead period, on 11/11, begins the fall signing period. It lasts for one week, until 11/18. So we're technically not in a signing period yet. Once the fall signing period is over, recruits can't sign letters of intent again until April 13, 2016. The spring signing period lasts until May 18th.

3. See #2. We've had plenty of spring signees. Yes, I believe both Jett and Yarbrough were spring signees; Jett out of prep school and Yarbrough because he wasn't academically qualified yet during the fall period.

I think we may see a transfer or two after this season. If Crews shortens the rotation there will likely be a couple of dissatisfied Sophs who will look for new opportunities.

In each of the past two offseasons, there have been over 700 D-I transfers; with 351 teams, that's just over 2 per team. So we're in an era that even if things are going well, you can expect 1 or 2 outgoing transfers. But in a struggling program with a large sophomore class with a few guys who might slip, I think you're absolutely correct. If I had to bet, I'd anticipate 2-3 outgoing transfers in 2016, and that's not even assuming a coaching change.

My opinion, of course, means nothing but I don't like more signed letters of intent than open spots. If a kid transfers, or the odds are that one or more will likely transfer, then sign the replacement in the Spring - don't oversign in the Fall thinking someone might leave or Crews will have to chase someone off.

Now, if Hines was given only a one (1) scholarship with nothing further (such as, if you play well, we will re-evaluate again next year), then sign another this Fall. Otherwise, wait until the Spring.

Operating like that puts your program at a disadvantage. This isn't 1995 and our program's apparent refusal to admit that will hurt the program. You have to accept the current environment you are operating in or you will fail.

If you want to operate like an old school basketball program drop to division 3 or accept the fact you will never be a consistent top 50 program. Hell, just give up on trying to be a consistent top 100 program.

On the contrary. Your approach may work at the top programs which reload with talented players who are already college ready but not here at SLU where we need to find the late bloomers and/or diamonds in the rough who first need a little coaching. Even if only 1 or 2 scholarships are over-booked in the Fall - meaning that 14 to 15 kids are underclassmen or incoming Frosh and ready to be on team next year, the panic, stress and worry among the team roster, IMO, would result in decreased learning and improvement among at least half the roster which would more than offset the benefit of landing a Fall recruit instead of a Spring recruit.

Last year, my daughter's volleyball program kept the girls on edge with constant talk and comments of changing girls between the top 2 teams. Finally, after halfway thru the season, 2 girls were moved up and 2 girls were demoted. Without commenting on the wisdom and benefits relating to the 4 girls affected, it was apparent that the other girls on the top team (except for the 2 or 3 stars on the team) could finally relax a bit and not be so afraid about making mistakes. Just like pulling a player from the game immediately following each and every mistake on the basketball floor, no kid gains confidence or improves their game in an environment where a few mistakes results in them being let go from the team. While I see the honor of allowing all recruits to stay on the team for 4 years as long as he is a good student and citizen, I also realize that mistakes are made and that rosters need to be improved to have sustained success. But I just don't think a positive learning environment is created when over half the guys are wondering "Is my scholarship being taken away?"
