I'm not up on SLU real estate anymore, but is that space big enough to build anything of consequence? Wouldn't the smart money be on the Humphreys name continuing?

Good question. The building is kind of a dump (doesn't mean I don't love it) and the site is much larger than the building footprint, so I wouldn't be surprised if the underlying land was worth nearly as much as the building. At that point, demo becomes feasible.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the new owners that is for sure. It is a fantastic location for a college bar, they just need to figure out ways to get people in there on a nightly basis. Easier said than done, to be sure.

Sucks that the bar is empty every night besides Wednesday 10pm-1am. And they are only selling a majority of $1 pitchers x1 a week. Everyone seems to go to Soulard on the weekends anyway. Also, what the hell is wrong with the Shack (aka Laclede's) location? Is the land that expensive that no one is willing to buy it?

I heard the people who own the property are apparently trying to sell it for a ridciulous price and so no one is stepping forward at the moment. Would be interesting to know if the value will continue to climb since all of that land south of campus will be undergoing big renovations in the next few years

There once were plans to tear down the Shack building and build apartments there, but the deal fell through.

I feel like I went to SLU at the best time for campus adjacent drinking. Humphreys, laclede's/cheaters/pierre laclede's and library annex

Edit: I guess throw in field house too

My freshman/soph years 02-04 were pretty solid with Humphreys, Laceledes, Fat Freddie's/whatever it was when it was only open on weekends, the city brewery, and that ###### place over behind Captain D's by the med campus. The ID'ing in those days also made it easy to get in most places.

Being a student here now is some slim pickings, I will say that much.

Do you have more than 2 choices? Because then you're better off than a lot of us. From 2001-2005, it was Humphrey's first, then Laclede's, and that was it. Fat Freddie's closed down before I was 21, but I did get in there once with a Nebraska ID. It was only open spottily for maybe one year while I was there. Joe Boccardi's was open for a while on the other side of campus, but that was more of a restaurant and we only drank there sometimes because we knew a couple employees. I guess we also had Vito's but no one hung out there.

You also have the Library Annex, Pappo's, Urban Chestnut, Triumph, Field House and a few other places within walking distance. NONE of those were there in my day, kid. Quit whining.

I forgot about Boccardi's friday night all you can drink for whatever stupid amount it was. Some dude in a wheelchair tried to fight me there one night. I wasn't exactly sure how that was going to go.

In the 90s, we had:

Humphrey's

Caleco's (Later known as Laclede's)

Billiken Bench Club (Later known by a bunch of names; since demolished for a Jimmy John's)

20 North (Hippie bar on Vandeventer; since demolished by SLU)

Bullfeathers (Corner of Grand and Lindell - my favorite bar; since demolished by SLU for no real reason)

The original Vito's in the basement of the Bullfeather's building

Clark's - just across Laclede from Humphrey's - closed right before my freshman year. Later became The Grind (a coffee shop) and eventually demolished by SLU.

The Fifth House building on Laclede has been vacant since well before my freshman year.

Pistol I am not meaning to cry woe is me for this. I know little of lacledes or what the landscape of nightlife looked like before my time here. But what I infer from older friends and people here is that there were places that more people congregated at. There are more options near campus now to be sure, but in terms of places students actually go to, they are more so in soulard. Library Annex and Humps are about it for bars close to campus as far as places that students actually go to. In the case of Humps, aside from Wednesday there aren't many students there. That is the kind of option I am saying that doesn't really exist.

Caleco's downtown has some pretty good food and pizza

Understood. I just wanted to go on an "in my day" rant. Although, to be fair, I think I probably did attend at the worst time in SLU history for campus-adjacent bars.
