And not eating in the weeks leading up to finals seems like a good plan. Food is fuel and whatnot. The racist stuff sucks, but stop looking for a singular villain. I don't know for sure, but I have read about a few different incidents, but they seem to involve individual students doing stupid things (drunk kid wandering into a black student event and yelling something racist and a kid smearing a swastika in feces in a dorm). I think in the past they have had students deface a black gathering spot (I think two students spread cotton around the spot). I think you sum up the incidents, but I think the real sticking point is an apparent lack of response by the university........ truth and reality are not always the same..... Right, I believe that would be the primary complaint - the responses to these situations. Be interesting to see how this all plays out, the football team appears to be united in not playing until there is some sort of resolution. What happens if a team or two inside the college football top four decide to unite and force the issue a couple weeks before the college football playoffs? What happens if a couple of number one seeds decide to force the issue heading into the NCAA tournament? What happens when billions of dollars are on the line instead of millions? I think that these kids have been waiting their whole lives to compete at this level. So for your College Fball scenario...there will always be 4 teams ready to play for a championship. Would I really care if Clemson decided to fall on their sword bc they want compensation? Not really. Just insert Baylor in that spot and have the playoff carry on. Getting multiple teams to fall on their sword would never happen. The kids came to the university to play a sport...not change the system. As far as Mizzou goes...these power struggles are very interesting to watch play out. I saw the list of demands from the student group and one of them is to, "have the university president resign and in his speech he must admit that he has white priviledge". (or something to that effect). There are several parallels to the events at SLU of the past year. For some reason, I dont predict SPUMAC will navigate the waters as well as SLU did. I think there is a chance that this could spread to other issues because of social media. It is feeding the whole thing at Mizzou. Many kids that age have a desire to be seen as part of something bigger than themselves and want to be social media stars. If Wolfe steps down or is forced out it will energize many players across the country as they realize that they actually hold all the power. If the Clemson was undefeated and the players decided to take a stand, it would have a huge impact. To your last point, this really shows how well SLU handled the Clock Tower protests. Apparently, there are a number of players that don't completely agree on the hold out. I wonder if these players would be doing this if they were undefeated and ranked in the top 5 with a chance to make the final four for a national championship. I would bet money they would not. A black student gets called the N word by an unknown guy in a pickup truck and then another unknown guy on a cell phone causes more problems a month later. How do we even know if the guy in the pickup truck was a student or somehow involved with the University? There has to be much more to the story or someone is looking for attention and/or a national platform. Silence from Ferguson?? Really?? He was pushed out because he and his team allowed it to get to this point. This started as a labor dispute over benefit cuts for graduate teachers. That is why the guy was on the hunger strike. Wolfe lost total control over the narrative and the situation. For that he derseved to be fired. The guy got out foxed by a bunch of hippie graduate instructors.
