Recruiting - 2016

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the update, BB. I saw on "SLU Talk" on the Post-Dispatch site that supposedly there's a rumor going around that Tatum notified Crews that he's coming here. I'm sure that's just your typical made up message board rumor though.

First of all, I doubt this is true.

But...I kind of wonder if it would work out this way. Jayson tells the staff so that the staff can use it as recruiting material throughout the summer, but Jayson waits until after Peach Jam to assure as much attention as possible on the Eagles and stuff. Not that they need it though.

This board is going to be a lot of fun following the decision. If he comes here, we can all begin making our Final Four plans IF it is a no, it will mark the demise of the program and we should begin plans to just shut it down.

If that were true, I'm sure you could find the coaching staff at Humphreys buying house rounds. But hey, its a good rumor at least.

Anybody been to Humphrey's recently? Maybe that's where it started.

Or does anybody work at a tattoo shop? Perhaps it started from Jim Crews getting a tattoo of Jayson's face on his back like SteveO has of himself.

If Tatum told Crews he was coming and keeps it to himself so he can bring more exposure to the Eagles then how would Crews be able to use it as recruiting tool? If he starts telling recruits that Tatum is coming then the cat is out of the bag.

I have changed over the years on this over signing issue - I use to agree with those who don't like it but the truth now is that given with all these kids transferring on their own then how can a school not over sign - they have to protect themselves or else they are out their scrambling with all the other schools in late spring and summer to sign the few good players who may not qualify (the reason he is still out there) or chasing a bunch of 2 stars who where hoping upgrade their status by not signing in the fall with a lesser program. Can you do it every year probably not but in years when you have only 1 or 2 schollies it may make sense.

I don't think the rumor is true of course and from reading SLU talk before, I could see it more to just bug that one poster who hates SLU.

However, I could see the reason if he does tell Crews early but wants to keep the focus on the Eagles and he announces after Peach Jam because Crews may have a backup plan if he doesn't get Tatum. Perhaps his Plan A is Tatum commitment and turn that into a commitment from Curry using Tatum once he announces.

However if he doesn't get Tatum, then he goes to Plan B which would be he has been keeping an eye on a couple other kids (2-3 star range) that he can then offer. He may not want to offer without knowing if Tatum comes because perhaps if Tatum commits, the other kid or kids would commit quickly and he would be without a scholarship for Curry (perhaps assuming he would offer Barnes if Tatum commits and doesn't want to over sign two kids). Of course he could pull a scholarship offer but Crews seems to not like to do that which is why he doesn't offer very quickly.

Once again, I don't think it's true and I think that I am over thinking it but I like the idea of him telling Crews already so I'm going to develop a theory where it makes sense.

I do not know if this rumor is true or not. What I do know is that should Tatum decide to go elsewhere, we will not be finished, or dead, or buried, we will still be a good program working hard to get better. This is not a binary situation, great or terrible, all dependent on one person's decision. I hope he comes, I would be delighted if he does, I will be upset if he does not come, but if he goes elsewhere it will not be a disaster of the magnitude some in this board are talking about.

Agreed.

I highly doubt some rumor posted by an anonymous person on the STLtoday forum has any validity.

I do know that in many cases, AAU teams put pressure on kids not to commit early because they like the idea of multiple schools evaluating their team, thus gaining additional exposure for the kids and the program. Quite frankly, that probably doesn't apply to FBJT as he's only got 4 schools still in the hunt and besides SLU, the other 3 likely aren't recruiting anyone on the Eagles. The only exception maybe being Tillmon.

Heard from a very reliable source that the chances of JT choosing SLU are 50/50.

Tyler Cook's Top 6

Iowa

Iowa State

Virginia

Arkansas

Mizzou

Florida

Looks like Hoiberg to the Bulls. We'd obviously be an incredible longshot, but maybe we can replace Iowa St in his top 6, get Tatum, and then land Cook, and then win it all
