Recruit (1/7)

  1. Billiken Rich, I agree - fans can and should be critical of the players, the coach and even the administration when they deserve it. Call it a stupid play, an awful shot, an idiotic pass - because we all make mistakes at one time or another. But to say a player is the worst player in Div 1 basketball crosses the line. You aren't criticizing an instance, you are condemning the player. A true fan doesn't do that to a player on his or her team. That's not criticizing, that's just being pitiful and mean spirited about a player who represents our team and our school. And to stick to that position hours after the game, hours after the passion has subsided, is unacceptable from one who calls himself a fan. My guess is most of you are wannabe's who don't have a clue about what it takes to play college athletics.
  2. Ah, I love it. As I expected. You guys are great at dishing it out but can't take it when it is directed back at you. Grandy was right. You go ahead. You call yourself fans - but you aren't. True fans can be fanatical and still remember that these are 18, 19, 20, 21 year old kids out there doing their best to represent the school we cheer for. And a true fan, while maybe passionate and in the moment makes crazy comments, but when things calm down realize the potential harm such comments may make. Yet you refuse to acknowledge the important role Manning played down the stretch to help the team win the game. You are more concerned with your right to be an than backing the team. You go, yes, that's a true fan.
  3. I was in town tonight and went to the game. Yes, it was frustrating, but they are a young team. They are still learning. Anyone who has actually played sports at a competitive level can see that they are thinking too much and not just reacting. That is typical of a young team that is still trying to learn their new coach's system. So why my heading 'what is a fan?' After the game I read the game board and couldn't believe some of the comments some people made about some of the players, the team and the coach. It is like a competition among some of you to see who can be more vicious, more biting, more mean spirited in their comments about the team and certain players in particular. So back to my question: what is a fan? Does a true fan really make such comments about the team and the players he or she supports? I swore I would never post again - and, I'll do my best to honor my promise in the future. But Grandy was right - you people really call yourselves fans? Yes, we all get frustrated, but I assume we are all adults. We need to remember this is a public forum and the players, fans, and even general members of the public read this site. People assume it is associated with the university and the team (yes, I see the disclaimer, but most don't). I would like to ask people to remember who reads the board and what it means to be a fan. I've always thought a true fan supported the team and the players in good times and bad. And if you want to criticize the team, please be sensitive and mature in your comments. And yes, I read lots of boards for lots of teams I follow. At times this is by far the most immature, irresponsible board I read. And for the record, John Manning was the best of the Biliken big men on the court tonight. There was a reason why he was in the last 5 minutes of the game, and he made important contributions during that time - the critical time in the game when we came back and won. I hope he doesn't read this board, but if he does, I hope he doesn't pay attention to the idiotic comments some people make in frustration.
