Recruit (1/7)

  1. Actually, Street & Smith was bought out by American City Business Journals, which is headquartered in Charlotte. Also same company that bought out The Sporting News, so the annual hoops preview is now published under the SN moniker.
  2. UK typically plays an annual "neutral site" game in Louisville - UNC Asheville in 2009, App State in 2008, UAB in 2007 (lost that one!), Chattanooga in 2006, Indiana in 2005, etc. Apparently also played neutral site games in Cincy in the past, but stopped doing that several years ago. I can remember when Dean Smith would bring the Tar Heels to Charlotte for a yearly neutral site game or two, but UNC-CH no longer does that on an annual basis and the only recent visits to the Queen City have been for an occasional game with Davidson, which last occured in 2007.
  3. Latest from New England Recruiting Report. Link: Majok Update
  4. FWIW, saw this piece that mentions Saint Louis in the "final four" list of 6-8 PF Majok Majok of Northfield (Mass.) Mount Herman School. Masslive.com: WMass hoops recruiting update
  5. Alex spent this season at Indian Hills CC in Iowa. BTW, he failed to qualify academically at Davidson and sounds like he may had some of the same issues at Marist.
  6. Specifically for Samaritan's Feet, which has been a passionate cause of IUPUI coach Ron Hunter since 2007. ESPN.com: Hunter continues work for Samaritan's Feet In addition to Lutz, La Salle's Dr. G also participated this season from the A-10.
  7. Yes, Cal and Coach K have radio shows, both of which are broadcast nationally on Sirius XM.
  8. Led by tourney MVP and former Charlotte 49er PG Michael Gerrity. BTW, around these parts (Charlotte, NC), USC is the University of South Carolina and if you live in the Palmetto State, "Carolina" has nothing to do with UNC-Chapel Hill! Happy Holidays and congrats on getting Cody Ellis cleared by the NCAA!
  9. That "home" game actually played in Lubbock, Texas as part of a round-robin tourney at Texas Tech. TAMU-CC usually pretty good, so not surprised they won, though margin of victory is an eye-opener considering the Beavers are supposed to be an upper division PAC-10 team this season. BTW, OSU plays GW later in the month in DC. Anyway, congrats on the win over SEMO. The A-10 looking pretty good on opening weekend!
  10. Today's Charlotte Observer has a piece about local player David Chadwick Jr. and it mentioned that Rick Majerus had been in town this past Friday to visit him. The 6-9 Chadwick had signed to play at Washington State but asked for and received his release after Tony Bennett left WSU for UVa. Will prep this season at Hargrave instead of accepting offers that came from the likes of Marquette, Memphis, and New Mexico. 11. Gerrity was on campus through the fall semester and is now back in California. At first he was going to transfer to a D-II school (either Biola in LA or Westmont in Santa Barbara), but the latest is he'll walk-on at USC after sitting out yet another year! 12. Right now, the plan is to begin FCS (aka I-AA) in 2013 at the earliest, then eventually move up to FBS. Not sure where the Niners will be conference-wise. The Colonial (formerly A-10) will have 14 football members with the additions of Georgia State and Old Dominion, so that's probably not a choice. The Southern would seem logical since not all of its schools play football (Charleston and UNC Greensboro don't and Davidson plays in the Pioneer), so we'd be a 10th member, albeit football-only. From what I've heard, though, the SoCon isn't interested in a football-only member. That probably leaves the Big South, which has 7 institutions playing football, including football-only member Stony Brook. Anyway, initially football won't affect our A-10 affiliation for some time.
  13. Ian AndersEn does the kiss thing as a homage to his wife. Actually nothing original for Charlotte as Diego Guevara did the same back during the Conference USA days. Anyway, Andersen is a streaky player, as he can go off for 21 points like he did against Clemson back in November then completely disappear and go scoreless as well. BTW, Andersen is starting because there just aren't many bodies left this season. First, back-up PG Michael Gerrity quit the team after the Labor Day weekend trip to Toronto. Then top incoming SG frosh Shamarr Bowden blew out his knee before the official start of pratice in October. Bowden was the leading scorer for the Niners during those 3 exhibition games against Canadian colleges. Sophomore starting SG (and back-up PG after the loss of Gerrity) Charles Dewherst suffered his 2nd season-ending injury as a Niner during the 12th game of the season. Right now the back-up PG is a walk-on who up to now seldom saw any PT and didn't last night at all as DiJuan Harris played almost the entire game before fouling out near the end. And then there's starting SF An'Juan Wilderness, who has missed 7 of the past 10 or so games due to a stress fracture. Don't think this year will cost Lutz his job. He signed an extension after last season, he's the all-time winningest coach at Charlotte, and he's a UNCC grad as well. Getting rid of him would cost the school mucho bucks at a time when its focus is fundraisng for resurrecting the football program. Not to mention the fact is would probably result in the loss of top 150 signee 6-8 PF K. J. Sherrill (Rivals #78). As for Coley, don't think he'll be transferring anywhere since this is his senior season! Anyway, good win for the Billikens last night. Niners just find it extremely difficult to win in St. Louis.
  14. Not aware of a 2-year A-10 transfer rule, but not sure. Anyway, when Andres Sandoval left Richmond after his freshman season in 2004-05, he transferred to Sante Fe CC, then played his junior (06-07) and senior (07-08) seasons at Dayton.
  15. Could be that Katz is only doing the "If I were commish" part. Kyle Whelliston wrote the A-10 preview and Jeff Shelman (Minneapolis Star-Tribune) penned the MVC piece.
