tigerluke
2-burwell is completely nuts to think kansas will come to 4 team tourney in stl I agree that Burwell is delusional to think KU would show up to an early-season tourney in St. Louis that includes Mizzou, but if you take Kansas out of the equation, why doesn't St. Louis have a big early-season tourney at the Dome or Scottrade? It could even include Mizzou and SLU, not as a guaranteed game, but a possible second or final round matchup. I'd sign up for that, just add in a couple fluff teams another mid major and another big boy or two and you've got it. 8 teams, Friday-Saturday-Sunday, not a bad idea. tigerluke
And Pistol, just in case you were wondering how "one of South Carolina's public schools" measures up to SLU... prebilliken
-back to burwell's article, here are my take aways...1-thanks to burwell for writing a positive article on SLU, 2-burwell is completely nuts to think kansas will come to 4 team tourney in stl, 3-i don't care if we play mizzou, it would be good for our coffers, but i think in some ways we look small and like we are begging big/older brother to play with us, 4-if burwell is such a college bball junkie, his term, then why doesn't he show up to games last year? or before mid-feb this year? where have you been junkie? siue? cape? methdale? on your couch? I agree with all of your points. Except "in some ways we look small and..." I think the way that Majerus has, since he arrived, had an aim of playing Mizzou, and now that we are having a solid season, it looks rather confident. From all I've read the way Majerus made his statement Tuesday night was classy and hopeful, not eager. Burwell isn't a raw X's and O's, or a logic guy. He just likes to fire people up. SLU21
Wow, small man syndrome running wild in this thread. The amount of whining and crying in this thread proves tigerluke's point about how there is no reason for them to play us. No one in CoMo cares about SLU, but we now have a 7 page thread bitching about how they are "ducking" us. I would love to play Mizzou every year, the best way to make it happen is to take care of business on the court, and not get players suspended off the court. While i would like to see it happen i don't really care if it doesn't.

When I was admitted to SLU we were 68. I don't understand the drop in the progress that school made while I was there... But that's a whole 'nother discussion. SLU21: Im not sure anyone has been to small to TigerLuke. (TigerLuke? Im sorry, that was a rushed user name. You sound like a villian out of an 80's Hong Kong produced action movie.) Its been a basketball talk. I did post the arrested development chicken dance clip... That was small, but boy was it well written and witty. We haven't proved anything on the court yet... we take care of business for the next couple years, and Mizzou will HAVE to play us. Lets stop bitching about it now, no way this happens until we see consecutive NCAA years. PS. our US News Rankings are a disgrace...absolutely emberassing @ #90... lets try not to bring those up either unless we are screaming at SLU to get that ###### corrected. For the record: I never said Mizzou was too good to play SLU, I just don't see how Mizzou has much of anything to gain from it, so I understand why Alden won't do it, and I've been trying to explain that all day. tigerluke
and what exactly does mi$$ouri gain with the pitiful nonconference schedule it plays now? Seriously though, what Mizzou gets from its non-conference schedule (which this year featured 2 Big East teams, 1 Pac 12 team, and 1 B1G team) is they win, and have a good RPI, and make the tournament, and not have to worry about whether or not SLU played way over their heads and pulled off a big upset that might hurt them come Tourney time. prebilliken
Here is the fact of the matter: sometimes matchups in college sports should just happen, if for no other reason, because they're fun. As hard as Villanova hates on the rest of the Philly schools, as much as they talk about how they will never be in a conference with Temple, St. Joes, LaSalle, again, they still play the Big 5 games. What does Nova have to gain? They have their power conference spot locked up. They have their rings. Bragging rights, that's it. And that's why they play. What if SC would have shunned ND in some of ND's down years? USC is off winning national championships (then getting them taken away) and ND is struggling to stay above .500. Wouldn't they have "benifitted" more from scheduling Florida? Ohia State? Ect. Bragging rights. Mizzou-SLU would be fun. Simple as that, we've lost that today in college sports, its all about money, or RPI or tv rights. But that would be a fun weekend in STL. Every kid who went to MU from STL coming back home, every local kid gearing up for the big state school. The arena with split colors on each side. Kids trying to out party each other. Alumni and older fans spending crazy amounts of money on beer and the works, re-living the glory days. There would be tailgating, pre-gaming, pep rallies. Everyone here has to admit it, if done right, that game could be an event. 24,000 people, two bands, two different cheerleading squads. Screw money (which they would make) it would be a good time. Why do you throw parties? You're not going to get a job promotion from throwing an awesome party. You're not going to become famous, or enlightened. But I'd bet you have fun. Maybe talk to some girls, have a few too many... Mizzou-SLU would be fun, people would look forward to it, people from around the state would flock to it. As much as Mizzou wants to act like "SLU... meh" they would sell there allocated amount of tickets. Easily. God forbid we do something because people would really enjoy it. waldo027
Mizzou doesn't have a good RPI from playing home games against Kennesaw St, Navy, Binghamton, William & Mary, and SEMO. They have a good RPI from playing Kansas, Baylor, K-State, Iowa St, and Texas, all home and away, and being 7-3 in those games. Playing SLU on a neutral court, even if Mizzou loses, is better for their RPI than a win at home vs Binghamton. If Mizzou and SLU played next season, SLU would be favored. Mizzou currently plays a 7 man rotation, 5 of them are seniors. SLU loses Conklin, but we have 2 talented freshman bigs (sophs next year) waiting on the bench. I will admit I don't know much about who Mizzou has on the bench for next year. Also, Mizzou is coached by Frank Haith, SLU is coached by Rick Majerus. DuckFayton
Amen. SLU beating Mizzou on a neutral or home court would not be a huge upset, especially next year. Just keep winning the next few years and the arrogant tiger fans will have nothing left to do except grow a sac and play some damn basketball. Tonka
tigerluke, a couple things: - you say us playing Mizzou would be like our Superbowl. Well, if it seems that way it's because you won't play us. When one team will not play another for so long and then finally does, of course it will be a big game for us. Had we been playing every year like we should be, it would just be a great rivalry game. You are kidding yourself if you think Mizzou fans wouldn't treat the SLU game the same way. It may not be a charge the court moment for Mizzou if they beat SLU, but the sheer happiness of beating SLU would make Mizzou fans ecstatic. Most Mizzou fans despise SLU fans and would really get up for this game. So, let's not act like it would be a one way thing. The games being played would be huge for both teams and both fans. - avoiding playing SLU is ridiculous on all fronts - there is no arguing that it would be great for college basketball, great for all fans, great for recruiting all around, etc. Sure, there would be that risk that if SLU won when having a down year, it would stink for MU. But, if you have confidence in your program and want to be an "elite" team, you man-up and take that risk by playing the natural rival 70 miles down 70 - The "little brother" Lastly, you self admit, you're not an "elite: team. You also say there is a huge gap between SLU and Mizzou. One thing Mizzou fans are ignorant on though is that they are not seen as prominently as they think they are on a national scale. Go talk in basketball circles all over the nation and people don't see Mizzou as prominent as they think are.
