05-06 prospectus is out!

I was very encouraged by reading this publication because I think we have fewer weak links than I can remember in the modern era. Justin and Bryce still have to prove themselves but they have strengths that we have not seen at the end of the bench in years. And Justin may surprise and move up in the rotation. Everyone else has a real chance at contributing in a big way depending on the circumstances. We are more athletic than we have been in years and the defense should be, as always, tenacious.

It is too early to make any predictions, and I would like to see this group in practice, but the future looks rosy!

go to the summary on page 26 for the details of the 11 games that the billikens were within one possession very late in the game and lost last year.

anyone that thinks this team is in trouble based on last year's record need only keep in mind how close we were to basically being about 5 or 6 wins minimum better even with our two best players injured all season.

i gotta believe our continued maturation of our returning players and the best core of freshmen since hughes wins those 5 or 6 games this season.

that said, iowa, gonzaga, siu, north carolina, hawaii, and uw-milwaukee. that is a formidable non conference schedule right there!

Oh, So Close

Saint Louis played 12 games last year that were

decided in the last minute or in overtime and lost 11 of

those contests:

Austin Peay guard Maurice Hampton buried a

desperation triple with 2.5 seconds to play and the

Governors prevailed in overtime.

SLU scored only one basket in the last 3:45 and

fumbled away its final possession in a 61-58 loss to

Eastern Michigan.

Oral Roberts guard Ken Tutt drained a 22-foot

rainbow with 10 seconds left for a taut 55-54 win.

Reggie Bryant had his potential game winner blocked.

Hawai‘i forward Julian Sensley banked a leaning

jumper from the left side with 15 seconds left to beat

SLU 53-52. Izik Ohanon had an uncontested 16-foot

jumper to win the game, but it rimmed out.

SLU couldn’t make its free throws down the stretch

and Dayton did as the Flyers prevailed 62-54.

Afer leading throughout most of the second half at

Charlotte, the Billikens closed to 60-58 on Ian

Vouyoukas’ traditional three-point play with 50 ticks

left. SLU didn’t control its defensive board on a late

tip-in and lost 65-59.

SLU failed to score in the final 4:35 of regulation,

and Marquette completed an eight-point run as guard

Dameon Mason tied the game with 21 seconds left by

tipping in his own missed lay-up. The Golden Eagles

survived 55-51 in double OT.

SLU couldn’t control its defensive board after a

missed DePaul free throw and was forced to foul

Drake Diener, one of C-USA’s top free throw

shooters. Diener buried both for a 56-53 lead with

nine ticks remaining. Bills guard Dwayne Polk had a

game-tying trey blocked.

Billiken guard Darren Clarke buried a trey with 2.5

seconds to play in regulation, capping a SLU rally

from a nine-point deficit with 4:50 to play, but

Charlotte held on in overtime 83-78.

UAB forward Ernest Little blocked SLU guard Luke

Meyer’s jumper as time expired, and the Blazers

slipped past the Billikens 64-62.

Leading SLU 51-49, DePaul’s Drake Diener nailed

two free throws with nine seconds remaining to seal

the win.

by the end of the game even the blindest of coaches could see that he was the guy to shut down if they wanted to win. IO ended up having a nice career with us, the problem was the other two seniors we counted on were injured the majority of the year.
