BREAKING NEWS: Crean Fired at Indiana

John Gasaway : The news that Indiana and Tom Crean parted ways comes as no surprise today, but it would have shocked anyone -- even the coach's most dedicated detractors -- one year ago.  Just last season, the Hooisers tore through the Big Ten, went 15 - 3, and beat Kenntucky in the round of 32.  Now Crean's gone.  Former Saint Louis head coach [dead] was right.  All coaches are interim."

As TF found out at OKS, don't have even one bad year, no matter how many good ones you might have had.  Fans and P5 ADs are not patient!

Make the tournament basically every year. S16 or further most years. Not losing by double digits in the first round of the NIT.

The first 3 seasonss at IU were a complete rebuild.  In the six seasons after that Crean went to 3 Sweet Sixteens, went to the NCAA four times and won the conference twice.  Bobby Knight had zero conference championships and zero Sweet Sixteens in his final six years at IU.  Since end of the 1992-93 season Indiana has won the Big 10 a total of 3 times.  Tom Crean has two of those titles in the last six seasons.  Since end of the 1992-93 season Indiana has advanced past the second round of the NCAA tournament only 4 times total.  Tom Crean was was the coach of three of those teams in the last six seasons.

Not enough is made of the fact they lost their best player and first round talent OG Anunoby right as conference play began, imo

Indiana fans want the Hoosier success they knew from 1974-1994.  Unfortunately for them there are only a handful of Hall of Fame coaches available in a given era.  Tom Crean is not one of them, but he was one of the best options available at the time.

Jim Crews is available...

He checks all the boxes. An Indiana (and Knight) man. A recent national coach of the year x2. Conference championships this decade. All the boxes!

Maybe I'm in the minority but I still consider them one of the blue bloods along with UK, Duke, UNC, KU, UCLA, etc. If they haven't had a string of really good seasons since the 90s then maybe they're not. But Crean was making $3M a year which is one of the highest in the country, so they have the ability to pay like a blue blood program.

Perfect fit for a program whose fan base lives in the past.

I think Crean should be on the short list for Urbana-Champaign. Landing Crean like this, particularly without having to buy out IU's contract, is an absolute steal. Crean is a head-and-shoulders upgrade over Groce.

Being the coach at IU is a way to both make a big pay day and get eviscerated. the Hoosiers expect to win the national title every year. They are endlessly furious that they are not keeping up with Kentucky. The expectations at that job are absolutely out of control. Any coach would be wary of that, I think. It's not enough to win and advance in the tournament, you have to win the whole bloody thing.

Blue bloods advance past the second weekend.  Indiana has only made it past the 2nd weekend one time in the last 24 years.  Their overall winning percentage during that period is similar to Oklahoma.  And the Sooners have had more tournament success.  But no one's calling them a blue blood.

Indiana fans expect to have "blue blood" success, even if the actual status of the program amongst recruits has gone down.

I don't think there's any way Alford ditches Los Angeles for IU.. the expectations at UCLA are more realistic, I think the job at UCLA is more appealing.

Expect them to make another kamikaze run at Marshall, that will not succeed. I have no idea who Indiana will end up landing.
