He scored his first goal this past weekend in a victory over Dayton. The story on his journey to America was depicted in an article on SI.com and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. kwyjibo Posted October 10, 2016 Share Posted October 10, 2016 The soccer team had a stretch where they went 0-4-3 so it seems odd to talk about an at-large for a team with that stretch in their resume but they have an outside shot at an at-large berth. They are 3-4-3 and they would have to finish at .600 or better and have two marquee/bonus wins (they have Wake Forest on the road already and have Indiana yet to play). Soccer uses explicit RPI bonuses for good wins (will get bonus for road win over Wake and COULD get bonus with win or tie against Indiana). SLU would need to go 7-2-1 for the rest of the season and lose in A-10 final to get to .600. That is not easy and the team would have to keep playing well but the A-10 is weak so it is at least doable. Winning the A-10 championship might be even more doable but everyone would prefer not having to win it outright. They do not need to beat Indiana but that would mean basically no mistakes elsewhere. If they lose to Indiana it would be difficult to make it as an at-large unless they go otherwise undefeated (8-2). If they tie against Indiana I think they need a lot of things to go well also but maybe could squeeze in with 7 more wins. So of course, other things can help the cause like Wake Forest getting a few more marquee wins themselves (they finish with 4 tough games and if they crap out so then will SLU). With SLU's difficult schedule they have no bad losses and Marquette is the worst tie (they generally need Marquette not to collapse so that tie does not end up as an RPI penalty). If you recruited only those players born and raised within a 2 mile block of campus and kept all the local players at home, like we did in the 1970s, we would have been undefeated this year. If he had seven goals you might have something. i expected a player the caliber of Jordan Morris since both Morris and Mohammed have played for their national teams. SLU can't recruit local players anymore. Nick Popovic who was National player of the year at CBC in 2015 chose Indiana. Not SLU. I doubt SLU even tried. He buried a rebound back into the net early in the game. Interesting to note that DeSmet's Ben Yeager was in the nets for the second straight game instead of Otte. They have no bad losses (Marquette is the worst tie) and with Wake's tie at ND and a win over Marshall they got back into the top 25. This show's how unpredictable the RPI can be in soccer. SLU jumped 8 places not because they beat a weak Rhodey team but because they got max bonus points for a top 25 road win. SLU plays 3 weak teams in the next 10 days and they must beat all three to keep at-large chances alive and to set up a big game at Indiana.
