Corey Tate brings out the SLU greats

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry, but I don't recognize a lot of them.  I'm sure some of you can help out.  I recognize Anthony Bonner (second from left) and Erwin Claggett (far right).  Is the man second from the right Carlos Turner?  As for the other guys, save Tate, I have no clue (especially the older guys — before my time).

I happened across this on Tigerboard, of all places.  They're still, um, frustrated regarding Tate's move.

It's hilarious that Troy Robertson replied that he must have lost his cell #.

This is an awesome picture, literally made my day out here in Foggy SF.

This is a veritable Mt. Rushmore of Billiken Basketball in the Modern Era, with a few notable absences, of course.

But my goodness, Monroe Douglass, Anthony Bonner, Roland Gray, and Erwin Claggett rank among the Top Scorers in SLU History.

I can see Douglass scoring on the Alley Oop vs. Memphis State, Bonner with the thunder jam at Old Kiel vs. Colorado (I was there), Gray with the dagger 3 on the road in the NIT, and Claggs raining 3's at the Old Barn with Al McGuire at the TV mike expounding on "EC."

Pee Wee Lenard lived at Lewis Hall (Coronado) when I lived there during the SLU Law days.

Oh man they are bitter on Tiger Board: "We should have NEVER hired that fast slob: It was such an obvious pandering move to the STL African American basketball community. While I was never present at a practice, I can't imagine that fat slob could contribute much with on-the-court coaching. I could be wrong. He sure as hell contributed next to nothing with his supposed recruiting expertise.
Really not Tate's fault, I guess. He just wasn't a good hire. Another example of Mizzou magical thinking: we get a black coach from STL and then we'll get all the 5 star recruits from the area! That's the ticket!
Nevermind that we have a team of freshmen that won 10 games...we need a 'recruiting specialist' to bring in those NBA players that will take Mizzou all the way!
We needed another Steve Shields-like COACH, not a PR guy."

I'm going to assume they were pretty salty that within a few weeks of Tate coming to SLU we pulled in that 4 Star recruit from the STL area...

You guys are correct that is not Monroe.  Now I'm not sure.  Pee Wee is definitely in the middle.  AB and Roland are right. They are pushing 50 and look like they could suit up stll.  I just can't put my finger on the other two.  Quitman is a good guess.

It appears that B-Roy is a first-degree LinkedIn connection with Monroe. Maybe he can weigh in.

So what the hell, I just went ahead and asked him:

@Coreytate74Tate Bunch of SLU fans wondering ID. Can't figure far left guy; we guess rest AB, Monroe, Gray, Pee Wee, you, Bailey, Claggs?

But his answer(s) were a bit ambiguous. (He sent them both, in this order. I'm guessing that the guy on the left ain't no Billiken great, but then I'm not sure which one is Q.)
