Cool. Any news on what changed his mind?

From the 2017 Thread the Pelican posted the below:

His dad wanted him closer to home and nixed the original SLU deal. Original visit was Javon and mom. They revisited with the whole crew and were able to close dad.

Welcome to SLU Mr. Bess. Coach Ford's body of work so far is an A plus. The coaches recruiting and personality has brought back excitement to the men's basketball program. I am confident coach Ford will close the deal with some guards for 2017 to feed these athletes the ball.

A less obvious benefit of all these transfers: our guys are going to be going against three high-level athletes every day in practice. Something we haven't had in a while.

Bingo. Working against Foreman, Henriquez, and Bess in practice has to be more beneficial than going up against Jolly, Reynolds, and Yarbrough.

A few other benefits:

Players on the current team that due to a lack of talent behind the Evans, Jett, McCall, Loe, and Barnett class were thrust into roles with limited competition will see every day who will be their competition in a year. With these transfers eligible for 2017-18, some guys will have to improve or get replaced by the transfers in 2017-18, and that's not even factoring in the 2017 recruits Ford will sign.

Also, this could benefit us with 2017 recruits. Ford can point to these guys as guys who have bought into what he is building at SLU. It sounds better to say to a recruit that we can be good his first year than that the recruit can be one of the first building blocks to fix the remnants of a dumpster fire.

Reggie and Roby should benefit the most.

Another sort of benefit is that having 3 scholarships taken by guys who have to sit next year means more playing time for the rest of the roster. None of this Jim Crews crap where we play 13 or 14 guys and it is hard to get a feel for which guys are promising. We are likely going to suck next year, but at least some useful pieces (JB will get plenty of experience (hopefully) and there will be little question about which guys aren't cut out for A10 level play.

It will sort of be like when freshman year McCall and Jett played a ton and then we added Kwam the next year. The experience of playing a lot likely made McCall and Jett much better than if they had to sit behind Kwam.

Good point.

Agreed. There will plenty of playing time available next season, so it will be very clear who will be a contributor in the future and who should transfer. Big opportunities for MN and EW in particular to show what they can do.

Was excited when SLU got Travis Ford as its coach. The guy can flat out recruit. I am assuming that SLU has two scholarships to give for 2017 and so the talent infusion for the 2017-18 season is going to be over the top. To get four recruits of this caliber this late in the game is amazing. Now Ford has a lot of time to focus in getting two really top level players for the 2017 class (more if there are any transfers). Would nice to get at least the two spots we know of signed in the Fall early signing period.
