Big East

There's absolutely no way they let Gonzaga or Wichita State in. That AD who suggested it is delusional. None of the other AD's would let a west coast team into the conference, and Wichita is a great program but has literally zero TV market. It would be a disaster for the conference.

Why is Gonzaga absurd? As long as they had a traveling partner it could work.

Big East should go West and expand to 18 teams. Just have a league specifically for the best private basketball only schools. It is the only way they ultimately will survive.

Hopefully, the opinions of the Creighton of Omaha Athletic Director will not carry much weight with the Big East Presidents, especially the one sitting above the Potomac.

Thankfully, the Creighton AD's statement of support for Wichita State's Big East candidacy is not carrying much support at holylandofhoops.com, even among his own Creighton people.

Pretty sure our admin is attuned and attentive to what could happen w/ the Beast. Also, the highly un SLU like move of firing Crews now was directly aimed at the Beast powers that we will fix our trainwreck. Thus, the importance of hiring a name HC.

It does make sense for the Beast to expand West. If they do, it also makes sense they'd go after the best available hoops only schools of which we are not. They want to be the next ACC for the money, and they don't need another DePaul.

I see Zaga as a stretch because of the non revenue sports, but Dayton and WSU make economic sense and are in a far better position than us at this time. If this were to happen now, I fear we'd once again be the odd man out, thank you Jim Crews. It may be our only hope is they expand to 14 teams adding 3 midwest schools and one eastern school, ie UR or VCU. This means however they have to cut the TV money pie into smaller pieces. Not likely.

All in all a pretty bad situation to be in right now.

I think too much emphasis is being placed on our last two seasons. Sure they were awful, but the Big East is interested in long term viability, and SLU, with its size, its market, and its facilities is still well-placed in that regard. If we demonstrate a strong commitment to athletics with this coaching hire, I think we would still be in decent shape. We may have to wait a little bit, but I feel like Big East membership is an inevitability.

Hate to even bring the topic up given the focus for the next few days, but it looks like they are going to at least discuss it in May.

Creighton (who kept SLU out) is the only one talking about this. Nobody else in the BE is interested.

Any Gonzaga talk is all Few. The AD and President are not interested. Imagine baseball and Volleyball flying to Providence and St. John's for games annually. Few needs to start worrying about his repeated Sweet 16 choke jobs.

Last nights Zags lose was similar how SLU ended their halves this year. The inbounding troubles at the end of the second half and missed free throws killed them. The Zags may have been gassed, Witjer and Sabonis played the whole second half. With respect, I would take Few and his sweet 16 endings as the SLU coach any day and be really happy.

The Sporting News' Michael DeCourcy confirms on Twitter (@tsnmike) that Big East expansion is really not on the table, that from what he is hearing, the Creighton AD is alone in this.

Irrespective, time is of the essence for SLU. SLU must get its Men's Basketball Program back on track and ready for when the Big East expansion does come. Fox needs inventory, which means more games, more Big East teams.

The Big East Presidents don't want to add a public school. Full stop. SLU is still in decent position because of market size, location and institutional fit. Obviously the past two years has taken a bit of shine off of the prospect though. Part of all of this is the "Press Conference Win". Announcing Gonzaga does that for sure. SLU, not at the moment certainly. This coaching hire is so enormous that it really can't be exaggerated.

Why would anyone complain about Crews at this point. The job should have never been offered to him. There were many more worse choices at the time. I hope they go back to the idea of bringing in a truly great coach such as we did with Majerus. Over the years there were many bad coaches that quickly took us to the edge of Division 2 ball. This MBB team is important to the image of the school and recruitment of all sports and academic scholars. With Lisa Stone having the women's program a year ahead of schedule we can be one of those elite schools with great men and women's sports
