BILLIKEN NOTABLES

Saint Louis (10-13, 2-8 A-10) gets its second shot at the Dayton Flyers tonight. Dayton defeated the Billikens 61-45 earlier this year at UD Arena.

The Billikens were unable to build on their overtime win against Saint Joseph’s and fell 83-65 at Fordham last Saturday in the Bronx, N.Y. Davell Roby scored a career-high 16 points in the defeat.

Milik Yarbrough leads the team in scoring (10.3 ppg) and is tied for the team-lead in rebounding (5.0 rpg). He is tied for 17th in the A-10 with 12.8 ppg in league games.

Ash Yacoubou averages 10.0 ppg and is tied with Yarbrough for team-high honors with 5.0 rpg. He scores 10.2 ppg in league games.

Austin McBroom, who scores 8.6 ppg, leads the Billikens in assists (45) and steals (23). He connects on 45.2 percent (38-for-84) of his 3-point attempts, which is third in the A-10.

Billiken head coach Jim Crews is in his third season at the helm. The back-to-back A-10 Coach of the Year is 65-27 in three seasons at Saint Louis, 419-375 in 27 years overall.

The Saint Louis / Dayton series dates to the 1950s. The teams played regularly from 1986 until 1995 as members of the Midwestern Collegiate and Great Midwest conferences. In 1995, the Billikens joined Conference USA, while Dayton joined the A-10. The conference rivalry resumed when SLU joined the A-10 in 2005.

Saint Louis is in its 10th season of Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Billikens have captured the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season title outright the last two years.

Saint Louis has advanced to the NCAA Tournament the last three years, a school record. Additionally, the Billikens are one of 10 programs in the nation that have advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons.

Up next, the Billikens embark on a two-game road swing at Rhode Island (Saturday, Feb. 14) and VCU (Tuesday, Feb. 17).

RECAPPING THE FORDHAM GAME

Saint Louis dropped an 83-65 decision at Fordham Saturday in Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball action at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx, N.Y.

The Billikens dipped to 10-13 overall and 2-8 in league play, while Fordham snapped a nine-game losing streak and improved to 6-15 and 1-9 in the league.

Four players scored in double figures for the Bills. Davell Roby led the way with a career-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Mike Crawford hit a career-high six shots from the floor, including a pair of treys, en route to 15 points.

Austin McBroom buried three treys to help account for his 13 points, while Ash Yacoubou recorded 10 points.

Six different Billikens drained at least one 3-pointer. Austin Gillmann led SLU with a career-high five rebounds.

Fordham was led by Chris Sengfelder and Eric Paschall, who tallied 22 points apiece. The Rams shot a sizzling 66.7 percent (14-21) in the second half, 50 percent (23-46) for the game.

Saint Louis trailed by four at halftime and quickly tied it up early in the second half on baskets by Milik Yarbrough and Roby. But Fordham would go on a 10-2 run to build a lead it would not relinquish.

SLU vs. DAYTON | LAST TIME OUT

In a meeting on Jan. 17, Dayton knocked off the Billikens 61-45 at UD Arena.

Ash Yacoubou led the Billikens with 12 points. He shot 5-of-10 from the field, pulled down five rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded two steals.

Mike Crawford hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 10 points. Marcus Bartley buried two treys en route to six points. Reggie Agbeko tied Yacoubou for the team lead with five rebounds.

Dayton, which extended its then winning streak to eight games, was led by Kendall Pollard’s 20 points. Dyshawn Pierre had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

YARBROUGH LEADING THE TEAM IN SCORING

Freshman forward Milik Yarbrough continues to lead the Billikens in scoring with 10.3 ppg. He is also tied for the team lead with 5.0 rpg.

In A-10 games only, Yarbrough averages 12.8 ppg, which is tied for 17th in the conference. He is second among freshmen in scoring in A-10 games, trailing only Fordham’s Eric Paschall (18.9 ppg), who is third overall in the A-10.

Yarbrough’s 11 field goals made at George Washington are tied for the second most by an A-10 player in league play this season.

Yarbrough was named A-10 Rookie of the Week Jan. 12 after averaging 22 ppg in road tilts vs. George Washington and Davidson.

YACOUBOU CONTRIBUTING IN FIRST YEAR WITH BILLIKENS

Junior guard Ash Yacoubou is the only Billiken who has started every game.

The Villanova transfer, whom SLU head coach Jim Crews lauded for his work ethic and attitude during his redshirt season a year ago, is second on the team in scoring (10.0 ppg) and tied for first in rebounding (5.0 rpg).

In front of 30 family and friends in a homecoming game against Fordham in the Bronx, Yacoubou scored 10 points.

Yacoubou drained a career-high 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting in the win against Saint Joseph’s.

Yacoubou posts a 36.4-percent (8-of-22) shooting mark from 3-point range in SLU’s 10 A-10 games. That is a drastic improvement over a 22.2-percent (6-of-27) shooting mark over the Billikens’ 13 nonconference games.

Yacoubou posted his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 boards against Duquesne. His other double-double came against Rockhurst on Dec. 2 - 11 points and 10 rebounds.

ROBY PLAYING MORE AGGRESSIVELY

In Atlantic 10 play, freshman guard Davell Roby is third on the Billikens in scoring with 9.1 ppg.

Roby’s career-high 16 points at Fordham led the squad. It was the first time he led the team in scoring this season.

Against George Washington, Roby connected on a career-high four 3-pointers en route to 14 points. He followed that performance with an 11-point effort at Davidson.

During the nonconference season, Roby averaged just 1.7 “two-point shots” per game. That average is up to 3.6 per game in conference play.

CRAWFORD IS EFFICIENT

Sophomore guard Mike Crawford leads all Billiken guards in shooting percentage (.526, 30-57) in A-10 tilts.

He drained a career-high six field goals on eight attempts against Fordham and was 2-of-3 from long range.

Crawford was efficient in collecting a game-high 15 points against UMass, finishing 5-of-6 from the field, 2-of-2 from 3-point range and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.

For the season, Crawford averages 7.0 ppg overall and 8.7 ppg in A-10 games. He is fourth in the A-10 in 3FG percentage in league games (.455, 10-22).

BARTLEY ON POINT

Freshman point guard Marcus Bartley has started the last nine games for the Billikens.

During that stretch, he has hit 48.5 percent (15-of-31) from 3-point range and has scored 6.6 ppg. His 15 3-pointers lead the team during that stretch.

Against VCU, Bartley dished out a team-season-high seven assists. During the last nine games, he has registered 17 assists to 10 turnovers.

Bartley, who has hit at least one 3-pointer in eight of the last nine games, is second in the A-10 in 3FG percentage in league games (.469, 15-32).

MCBROOM GOES THE DYNAMITE

SLU’s leading returning scorer from a year ago (7.3 ppg), junior guard Austin McBroom is third on the Billikens with 8.6 ppg. He is third in the A-10 in 3-point field-goal percentage (.452, 38-84) in all games.

McBroom has hit big shots for the Billikens in his career.

Against VCU, it was McBroom’s runner with less than a minute remaining that put the Billikens ahead by two.

McBroom, who scored a career-high 26 points against Bradley, hit the game-winning 3-pointer against the Braves with seven seconds remaining.

It was McBroom’s 3-pointer with less than three minutes remaining against North Carolina A&T that completed a comeback and put the Billikens ahead for good.

Against Southern Illinois in the season opener, McBroom posted 24 points thanks in part to five treys. His biggest shot of the night came with 10 seconds remaining when he buried the go-ahead three.

Last season, McBroom hit a big shot late in a game at Duquesne. With the Billikens trailing by one with less than a minute left, he buried a three from the right side to give SLU the lead for good.

BLOCK PARTY

Senior center John Manning, who played at Fordham after missing the Saint Joseph’s game due to concussion-like symptoms, leads the Billikens with 1.1 blocks per game.

Manning tied his career high with four blocks against Rhode Island.

Manning has 70 blocks for his career. He needs six more to crack the Billikens’ top 10 all-time.

CREWS IN THIRD YEAR

Back-to-back A-10 Coach of the Year Jim Crews is in his third season as the Billikens’ head coach.

He is 65-27 in three years at Saint Louis, 419-375 in 27 years overall.

Crews was tabbed the 2012-13 UPS NABC Division I Coach of the Year, Sporting News’ National Coach of the Year and the A-10 Coach of the Year. He was a finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year award.

He has been a part of 16 NCAA Tournaments as a player, assistant coach and head coach. Crews played on Indiana’s 1976 national championship team and also won a title as an assistant coach in 1981.

SCOUTING DAYTON

The University of Dayton enters Tuesday’s game 17-5 overall and 7-3 in A-10 play.

Jordan Sibert leads three Flyers in double figures with 16.5 ppg. He has drained a team-best 51 3-pointers and shoots 45.5 percent (116-255) from the field.

Dyshawn Pierre averages 12.8 ppg and leads the Flyers with 7.4 rpg. He is also second on the team with 67 assists.

Kendall Pollard leads the Flyers in blocks (22) and is third on the squad with 12.0 ppg. Scoochie Smith scores 9.1 ppg and leads the team with 88 assists.

The Flyers’ roster features no players taller than 6-foot-6. UD has still found success, going 10-2 since Dec. 20 and averaging 73 ppg during that span.

Head coach Archie Miller is in his fourth season at Dayton with an 80-43 record.

Last season, the Flyers made an impressive run in the NCAA Tournament, defeating Ohio State, Syracuse and Stanford en route to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance.

Dayton leads 27-25 in a series that dates to the 1950s. In A-10 play, which began for the Billikens in 2005-06, Dayton leads 11-8.
