Mid-Major?

Recommended Posts

Why do you keep saying they haven't hired a commissioner yet? They didn't have one when they brought in X, Butler, and Creighton.

Just saying... I still hold to the hope that it is announced in the next 2 weeks; would be huge.

Because:

1) it's a fact

2) a new commish will likely precede and be involved in any expansion

3) it's emblematic of some of the issues the league is having getting going. Read holylandofhoops.com someday and you'll see that the league doesn't exactly have its stuff together right now.

What you say is true, sure, but they got 3 excellent teams under the same circumstances.

Not much is going to change with SLU, et al, nothing left to study (market size, arena, tradition, etc.), they may have decided 3 for 2013, then announce the 2 for 2014 later, it would have been too logistically difficult to do all 5 at once with scheduling, etc, etc.

I won't say I have no hope, I still think eventually we join because we have to do something..the A10 is not a long term solution anymore.

I do agree that Biondi failed, and I would lump May into that as well. They had years to prepare for this and they evidently didn't do a very good job. This was a surprise to absolutely no one and we were caught standing on the sidelines fingering ourself while Creighton was jumping in line.

I would assume the new president will bring in his own AD if he is sports oriented at all. Maybe the board can rescue this by hiring someone from Georgetown, Creighton, or Marquette.

Butler at 66 to 1, to win the entire tournament? For this coming season? They will be lucky to even make the field.

Of course the "mid-major" label is a worthless tag made up by the media to degrade the smaller schools. There are no well-informed people who seriously believe Gonzaga, Xavier, Butler, and UNLV aren't major basketball programs.

I'm not sure I totally agree w/ B'Roy on this. However, I do think if we get in it will be due more to Fox Sports dictating it than anything SLU's done. After Syracuse, ND, and Pitt announced they were ACC bound and the old Beast started adding FB schools from whereever they could find them it should have been obvious to the casual observer the BB only schools weren't happy and would do something on their own.

CU getting in ahead of us was a major wake up call. It made no sense. Someone at SLU dropped the ball, or didn't even know there was a ball to drop.

If we don't get in we should all be very wary of our BB future. The A-10 is not the answer because it's not hard to imagine UMass, VCU, and Richmond leaving down the road. It then truly becomes a one bid league and we have no Mid West Rivals. The best option we'll have is the Horizon or the MVC. Neither of which appears all that attractive at this point.

I'm sure Georgetown, Villanova, and Xavier love that. It just demonstrates how flawed and outdated the term is. Anyone worth a damn has evolved past using it at all.

Yep. Anyone who uses that term to describe the NBE, or uses it at all IMO, has an agenda and should be ignored.

What does that make the A10?

On that note, it was interesting looking at the final rankings from last year. We were 16. The only new BE team ahead of us was Marquette who was 11.

Behind us, but still in the top 25 were Georgetown and Creighton (new BE) and VCU and LaSalle (A-10). Each league had three teams finish in the top 25 and all six were from 11 to 25. I'm not arguing that the bottom of the A-10 is as good as the bottom of the new BE, but the top of each sure finished rather evenly last year.

Outside of Fordham and RI, is it really much worse? DePaul is as bad as those two.
