Rebounding stats

It seems obvious that rebounding is a top priority for the team this year. We have been getting schooled on the boards, and it is obviously negatively impacting the team.

Here are the rebounding stats per 40 minutes played:

Evans - 10.5

Loe - 9

Ellis - 7.6

Remekun - 6.7

Jett - 6.3

Conklin - 3.8

Salecich - 3.1

Cassity - 2.4

McCall - 1.2

Eckerle - 1.2

Obviously it's easier to get defensive rebounds when you are defending the post, so the number for Jett is espcially impressive. It also seems to me this stat shows how impressive Evans has been this year. Leading the team in rebounding as a 6-5 freshman wing is pretty impressive.

How about a line-up of Jett, Cassity, Ellis, Evans and Loe? That's a pretty talented lineup offensively, and it looks like one of the best rebounding lineups, also. Defensively that lineup would struggle with both Ellis and Loe, but hopefully Tuesday's benching (plus some time to recover from his illness) gets Cody going on both ends.

That would allow you to bring in McCall for an offensive spark, Salecich to shut down the opposition's hottest player, and Cory to spell the bigs. Unfortunately, this stat demonstrates that Brian's minutes may become fewer and fewer. Eckerle is at best a sparkplug for a few minutes at a time.

According to ESPN, we had 21 rebounds last game, and 7 of them were on offense.

The pilots were 28-47 from the floor. 19 missed shots. So the pilots only had 5 rebounds on offense.

I don't disagree, rebounding isn't our strong point, and at least last year, it was a policy of Majerus' to abandon crashing the boards on offense. Not sure what he'll do this year once it gets to conference play.

One of our biggest flaws right now is the other teams FG % and FT % (per Ken Pomeroy). There's no rebounds for us to grab if the other team is making all of their shots.

We took out Portland's guards, but we couldn't stop their bigs. I was surprised that Majerus didn't compromise our perimeter defense (at least a little) in that game in order to help out Conk, Remekun and Loe in the post.

Portland's team is fairly well balanced, and we couldn't handle it. I shudder to think about Duke's balance of bigs and guards.

As Triangle understands the game of basketball, a player can shoot a basketball from thirteen feet away without being hassled by the defense - it is called a FREE THROW. Our Billikens need too understand this concept. A .605 stat for this 13ft free shot is totally unacceptable. Although our opponents have shot 15 less free throws, they are shooting a respectable .747 and games are being lost. McCall (.875) and Loe (.800) seem to be the best in this area so therefore they should be the most aggressive on offense intoo the lane. Our season field goal percentages (except for Salecich, this guy should never, ever shoot the rock) and our rebounding stats (except for the Portland game) are fairly OK in comparison too our opponents. Triangle feels that the easiest way too improve this team and hopefully bring more wins, is too CREATE MORE FREE THROW OPPORTUNITIES AND MAKE MORE FREE THROWS!

so it goes

last years' if I got the columns straight- no reason to panic yet; obviosly Barnett will help next year with his ball hawk mentality; Evans is helping. Conklin needs to play more as he has been less rushed more relaxed to finish; rebounding is a quickess thin as well as jumping. We lost a lot of quickness in KM and Willie

Not having watched the game, it sounds like we got manhandled in the paint. FT's aside, and yes the astoot Mr. Too is correct in his assessment of FT's, but if we don't tighten up on the interior D plus get more boards, we're in for some very rough nights. It wasn't like Sikma was a 6'11" stud. He was 6'8". I don't know about the other 2 guys, but you would think with BC, CR, and RL we should have prevented it from being this easy to score bunny buckets. As for Duke, what does it really matter where you concentrate? They're good from the perimiter, inside, FT line, speed, defense, et al. It's gonna be painful to watch unless Coach K has a big heart. But how do you tell your kids to play at less than full speed? He won't. Of all games to get on national TV, why this one? I'm kind of hoping they've got another game to cut away to. You've got to admit, not only is it hard being a Bills fan, but sometimes you've got to think we're cursed. When this game was put on the sched we all thought, well we won't look that bad. Now, it's like, I hope we don't break our own record for fewest points scored. Hate the negativity of this post but it is what it is, and it ain't gonna be good when we travel to Cameron.
