kwamain Mitchell update

Recommended Posts

Weekeend Tourney;

Kwamain Mitchell, PG, Wisc. Playground – He’s sort of heated himself up this spring. He had 15 in one game and 5 the next (which was a blowout). Realistically, he’s an impressive mid-level prospect who loves contact in the paint. Tough minded guard.

Kwamain Mitchell indicated that St. Louis, Minnesota and Utah were chasing him the hardest. …

I know his team was playing in quarters today at Arizona Cactus Classic v NYC Gauchos, both teams went 5-0 to that point. He's playing with a combined 16' and 17's in this tourney. Had 15 assists in one game and plenty of steals in the tourney. Doing well.

Well...not a fan of comparisons. First his play is an undersized combo guard. He has even played wing in past, but has moved to point guard where he will likely play in college and is doing better job of creating for others and embracing the role, and making better decisions. He is very quick, and can blow by defenders and likes to mix it up in lane and can finish. Wiry, small, but strong, a poor man's Alan Iverson(in no way comparing their games). Very athletic. Can also score...needs to continue to work on 3's, continue his improved decision-making and assist first thinking, which he has recently made great strides in doing. He led this weekend's Cactus Classic in Assists, and was among leaders in steals.

In no way is he the same level of player at this point, but he is similar size, athleticism to Claggett or Perry, perhaps slightly shorter.

He'd be a nice get for SLU. Minnesota is interested now...well I guess that happens when he goes to a big AAU tourney in Minny and head to head does very well vs Wisconsin recruit Jordan Taylor.

St. Louis Eagle wing Kenny Harris worked overtime defensively against the Playground Warriors. Harris shadowed Playground guard Kwamain Mitchell all over the floor trying to contain the talented guard forcing the rest of the Warriors to beat them and it worked for a while. This was one of the best games of the weekend as Torres Roundtree and Mitchell went back and forth to the final minute. Mitchell hit a pair of pull-up jumpers late while Roundtree did his damage attacking off the bounce. Stronger then most on the floor, Torres scored with a pretty spin move pushing the ball through multiple defenders and he had a three-point play after a jump-stop finish where he was hit hard.

The Eagles and Playground Warriors went to overtime and Roundtree continued to attack. Torres went at Playground off the dribble then turned finishing with a jumphook for a one-point lead in the final minute. His bucket was countered by Mitchell creating a three-point look with his drive for teammate JD Wise who drained a three. Back the other way, Mitchell drew a big charge call from Roundtree. Then with seconds left on the next possession, Roundtree penetrated and threw a fantastic pass to a teammate who missed the lay-up and Wisconsin Playground was victorious 64-60 after some free throws. Mitchell finished with 24 while Wise put in 14 and leading the Eagles was Roundtree with 16 points.

Sounds like Jamal Tatum.

Another strong showing for Kwamain Mitchell. His team, the Wisconsin Playground Warriors lost 82-77 in quarters to eventual tourney champ the NYC Gauchos. Most of the WPG team that entered were their 16's players. Only 3 on the roster, including Mitchell were their 17's. Their 16's age group is one of better 16's teams in the country and already have two big national tourney titles, and a 3rd in their hometown Swish N Dish, in which they edged none other than the STL Eagles in the 16's title game without their best player, a top 10 National recruit for 09 class, in a very exciting game. Mitchell usually plays with the 17's team which is solid but nowhere near the level of the WPG 16's team for their age group. The 17's have defeated Eagles 17's twice this Spring.

Mitchell led the Arizona Cactus classic tournament in steals and finished 2nd in assists for his 5-1 team.

You can add Marquette to Minnesota, Utah, Wichita St and others who have called Mitchell this past week alone. His teammate Johnnie Lacy, a 16's player has been getting calls from Tennessee, Purdue and Wisconsin. Jamil Wilson, also 16's player and top 10 nationallly for 09 players is being recruited by most of the country. And they have a few other very good players too, worth looks,... lots of balance.
